First Crow Hunt
Permalink

So I went on my first crow hunt this evening where I always see a ton of crows in a cut corn field(the field was cut and tilled already). We passed a few crows along the road before we got there but saw none there. That didnt discourage me in the least as I was full of confidence still. I put out my dekes(3 flocked) on the ground and my electronic call(Hunter's Specialties Johnny Stewart http://www.basspro.com/Johnny-Stewart-Wildlife-Calls&153;-Attractor-Compact-Digital-Game-Callers/product/91405/85919 mostly on the Come Here call) and it was not very loud seeming. Now, I do not know how loud they are supposed to be but I was expecting louder. Saw a few crows in passing but none seemed to even give me a look. I thought maybe we werent hidden well enough but none seemed to flare away from us as they were passing so I do not know. I was just expecting my call to bring them in and at least get a few good shots off but no dice. Does anyone have any tips? Do you think I just need to spend some money on a good FOXPRO? I've been reading this board for last few weeks and really picked up some good pointers and was hoping my post tonight was gonna be a bragging post no but instead I am asking for help! Thanks in advance!

Try the same location, same set, but at daylight. Most of our row crop sets are very productive in the morning but really stink in the afternoon. Being hidden is everything. That caller is probably a little on the low side of the volume scale. If it has an external speaker jack I would defiantly add one.

8's right on the mark,you will find some spots are great in morning and some at night.Also locate your morning blinds facing west,and night facing east this will keep the sun to your back and provide shadows,in your blind ,combined with camo the crows will have a harder time seeing. As for the wind,well for me I would rather have a great blind and shadows,I can deal with the wind.

Is there any corn actually showing in that field? Or is it tilled under ground and covered up?

We have that same caller.  It works really well but we had to add an external speaker and amp to get the volume out of it we wanted.  Eats a lot of batteries in the winter if you call a lot but it's easier than blowing a call all day long.

My friend took delivery of a foxpro scorpion this morning. This is the cheapest in the foxpro range however it was still very impressive. We took it to the local park and turned it on and crows and magpies were coming from everywhere. We are going shooting in the morning for a couple of hours so I will know better then.

Is that something new that Fox Pro is making? Or maybe soething they only market in Europe?  Just wondering, I thought the Spitfire was their cheapest off their list.

@Mainehunt

The corn is tilled under and covered up.

@Critter
What kind of amp and speaker do you use?

Thanks guys for all these pointers already! Not too many boards I've been on(mostly fishing) are so willing to help out so much. I am a NE Missouri hunter btw. I think I'm going to try to get out there
again in the morning(is it like most hunting and get there about 1/2 hour before sunrise or roll in anytime early morning?), if I do I will post how I do. How well does standing beside a tree work for cover? There are grasses in front probably about waste high. I know that works really well for duck hunting.

BigWilly, No, standing beside a tree isn't enough. You might get a few like that, but not much.

Most on here will tell you that the most important thing on a crow hunt is to be fully hidden. Camo yourself, brush the blind, don't move until you shoot. Nothing shiny, and cover your hands and face.

Spitfire is a decent call. Used one for the last year. Remote isnt that great especially when its really cold. Decent volume with external speaker. I just got foxpro firestorm. 2 internal speakers with 2 external jacks and a better remote. Havnt used it yet but will let ya know how it works.

The Cass BigHorn speaker is a self contained amplified unit that runs around $40. Varmint Al's on the net has the parts listed for the DIY. Predator Masters has a sub-forum just for electronics.
