Question - Flocked Decoys
Permalink

I just have the common hollow plastic decoys.   I'm not sure i know what you guys are talking about when you say "flocked" decoys.   I saw at the Crow store a flocking kit.....looked like some flat black paint that maybe adds surface roughness to the decoys so they don't glare?    What do I need to know.

I've never used it, but I'm pretty sure its just like flat black paint, except supposed to be a lot stronger to handle the elements. Probably something similar to truck bed liner without the chunks.

It just makes your decoys more realistic instead of faded and shiny.

OK, that's what I thought.   Mine are still dark and I think ok for now.   I'm reading as much as I can here.    Some good ideas!

Flocking is, you paint them & then sprinkle a black fiber over them. the fiber(I'm sure thats not the correct name for it) adheres to the paint, makes a big difference in the look of the dekes. I did 6 with 1 kit, don't remember where I got it from & don't know if all kits are the same size. My kit came with everything but the paint. Try it, real simple to do & it makes the dekes look great.

By the time the crows realize my decoys are not flocked they are being shot dead or their ears are ringing.

Flocking is similar to velvet. It kills all glare and is a true black. The kits at crowbustets has the paint and flocking in them. I believe it helps with educated birds.

Charles on here that I hunt with has those same Flambeau decoys like in the photos above. He flocked his too.

Without question, they work better now that they are flocked.

Here is a pic of some regular flambeau, and carrylite decoys that I flocked myself..............I got the kit off ebay for around 10 bucks.....it was to do 100 goose heads I believe, it was enough to do 24 full body decoys, and there is probably enough to do that many more........I just used rustoleum oil based paint, then sprinkled it on with a giant shaker I made................

Funny you mention that, crows are very shiny, I agree. In fact I know one guy that sprays gloss-blue paint on the backs of his decoys. And he kills crows over them. But there is no doubt in my mind that for us, the flocked decoys attract crows better.

Here's a link to how we flock our goose heads before season.  Shows the basic idea and some tips.  Scroll down the page a bit for the video.

Those flocked decoys look awesome! I've also noticed that crows are fairly shiny, but whatever works I guess.

The way birds decoyed change dramatically for the good after I flocked all of my decoys...........I never had them land in the spread until I did that.....
