Jon's Gun and PP's Paint Job
Permalink

Someone here wanted to see how I did my paint jobs. Well here goes another one with Jon's 870.

Make sure that you have plenty of material for templates. Figuring the Jon likes to hunt in the pines, what better to use for a template.

First, I have to clean all the oil off and out of the gun.

After the gun has been washed. I put down a solid base coat of paint.

Now that the base coat has dried. With Krylon it only takes a few minutes, I start laying on the first layers of paint.

All I do is hold the pine branch against the gun, hold the paint about 6 to 8 inches off and spray a short burst of paint. I run one color from end to end. Once I have one color down, I then switch to another color.

Make sure that you switch branches and don't rush so you don't end up with this.

So here is what you end up with after layers and layers of paint. The good thing is that you just can keep putting on paint until you feel that you done. Then let it sit for an hour or so, go back and look the gun over to see if anything needs to be touched up or gone back over.

No as looking at this pic, I see that I have some more work to do before the paint job would be considered finished. Well back to the yard I go.

Well, I just wasn't happy with the paint job. So I went back out and added some more paint to it.

Why is that barrel so long? Good job by the way!

The longer the barrel, the farther you can shoot. Not really , its a barrel extension. Its a take off of the Metro Barrel Extension . I built one for my gun, then I had to build one for Jon.

Here is a pic of mine.

I finally started using sub-sonic shot and with the extension it works great. Well at least the one time I have taken it out it worked good. With the ports it really nocks the sound down.

Pupp

Killer post!!!  Great job on the paint and Metro Barrel solution.

Knowing you and Jon,I figured you would have used a maraJauna leaf for a template to mess with him a bit!!! Not that you would have any of that stuff lyin around!!LOL!biggrin

I did think of doing his first paint job in purple and pink hearts. That would have been a good post.

Ha!! I was thinking that Mary Jane leaf marks would be hard to explain to the game warden, but the hearts and stuff would be worse!!biggrin

Imagine that, the game warden walks up to see a 5 foot shotgun only to be covered in camo hearts, piece signs and flowers. Wonder how would that go over?

I suspect the wardens today would be too young or not know what mary jane is!disbelief Or not even know where Vietnam is on the map!!confuse With that said paint job looks great! I've been doing that to my sea duck guns for years, its the only thing that stands up to the ocean and the elements!!Good stuff!!smile

thanks, I hope by posting this it will help. Its really simple. You just keep spraying till you hit the spot to where you can call it done.

Did you end up putting the steps in the barrel?

No, after measuring out one of my uncles chokes. We found out that the wall of the barrel was to thin to cut it down any more. So we ended up with an extension with a .710 choke in it.

So that is supposed to be around a mod. I would think with the reduced velocity loads it would pattern tighter than the speced mod. Have you patterned it yet?

Will do. I will pattern both guns. Jon's is a .710, modified. Mine is .825, IC. I'll run both, sub sonic loads and standard loads through each gun to see what the difference will be.

the pattern, at 33 yards:

winchester 2 3/4 980 fps #8, offhand, wind 15 - 20 mph l to r

the patterner:

yes, the gun IS taller than the shooter:

the moral:
unless you can run faster than 980 feet per second,

HANDS OFF!

Sorry, Shane, no photos this time.  As E-in-C of the NCPHA, I've done so many photo essays that I hope you all can forgive me for just going out and enjoying some time out in the woods with my great friend and partner, and leaving the camera at home.

The story, however, goes like this:

Got a late start, cuz the wife kept me up late ( biggrin ) but PP was kind enough to wait up for me.
So we missed them coming off the roost, and ended up hiking around for 100 or 200 miles, trying to get a response to PP's amazing slate.

Finally gave up, and were heading back to the truck, when we jumped (ok, crashed) a bird about 50 yards up the trail.

(sidenote: after sneaking around for hours, why were we diddybopping down the trail?  was it exhaustion?  surrender?  loss of blood?  [the mosquitos were incredible]  stupidity?  you make the call.)

I figured it was all over, but we froze and gently lowered ourselves against the nearest trees, anyway.

Of course I didn't bother putting down my butt pad.  45 minutes later I would regret that decision.  But I really wanted to minimize movement at that point.

PP commenced the darndest series of runs and such that I've ever heard.

Don't bet your $400 box call against his slate - -  but that's another story.

A half hour later I saw PP tense up.  Oh boy!

I heard a soft putt or two, in the direction that the Popper was looking - PP gently leveled his gun and sighted down the barrel.

Now I knew we had one close.

I could not see the bird.  PP kind of rolled to the right a little and moved the barrel to his right knee - I found out later that there was a branch between him and his quarry, but the roll gave him just enough of a clear lane to get off a shot, if that bird would come out from behind a big pine...

I finally saw it, coming out, head down, pecking around, at 25 or 30 yards.

PP gave a soft putt -

The bird stood up -

Gray head!  A hen.

crap.

Shoulda seen Chuck's face.

Oh well, it was a really exciting end to an otherwise frustrating day.

And after wearing my boots down to nubs, where did we finally call in this lonely hen?

You guessed it.  100 yards from the truck.

Oh, the don't beat your box against the slate.

I grew up with slates or pot calls. Never had a use for a box, didn't need one. Well I was at a fellers house that wanted to see one of my custom slates. He already had a bunch of friends over, drinking and such. Well he told me that if you can't run a box, you just can't call a turkey. Now granted this guy has thousands and thousands of dollars tied up in custom box calls. With a many in the four digit range. So after he got done shooting his mouth off, I told him that I could match him sound for sound with my slate. He spoke up with " Whats on the line." I told him that I would put my slate up against his box. Now granted the box in his hand cost him $1200. So he was nice enough to pull out another box just encase he lost. So the calling began. Sound for sound, strike for strike. At this point the other fellers were having a good time listening to our calling. Then I figured that play time was over. Now granted these guy really don't know me, so I was thinking the favor was in the other hand. So I just let it rip. I put a back woods cuttin on his ass. Once I was done. The other fellers, just looked up and told him to hand it over. This calling contest was over. As far as bragging rights, I also walked away with a $400 , zebra wood box with two tiger maple plates. Its called a " Two Hens In A Box ".

It sits and collects dust.

I was nice enough to let a friend of mine use it on opening morning, saturday. I told him I had no problem letting him use it. Right up to the point of him asking me how much did I pay for it . I was nice enough to tell him, he did not need to know how much it cost. Just use it. He did give me a funny look when he asked " I really don't want to know, do I ?" . I said no and sent him on his way with the box. I image he would have killed that turkey if his son had not jumped up screaming about a tick getting hold to his testis.

But I bet it was funny.

After going back and looking at the pattern. Even with the left to right wind, if you look at the right of the target. The pattern ain't to bad.

Well we finally got the time to really put our guns on paper. We went over to my uncles house which just happens to shoot competition turkey guns. Well with a little advice from my uncle and a bench rest we punched some paper. I must say that the results were outstanding.

I would post one of mine but after what Jon's gun did, it really ain't worth the effort.

Here is a pic of one gun that my uncle shoots with.  It weights in at 35lbs.
