Hello all. just joined your forum... lots of good pics and info. I am in Canada about 3hrs north east of Detroit. I started getting into crows this spring...got a JS attractor with the amp a month ago. lots of corn feilds around here, I`ve found that once the corn gets over my head it is great camo. I like to set up the caller in a thorn tree on the fence line then go about 25yds into the corn...best cover I have found yet, and I still have a good open sky in all directions. the corn is 7' or less here. I find it helps alot to throw the dead ones up on top of the thorn tree after i get a few, seems to draw them in closer. I`ve found crows to be a challenge, the way they change speed and direction, sometimes hover in one spot for a second. I watched a documentary on them, scientists say they have over 200 distinct sounds and that they can tell each others individual voice...pretty amazing..I used to think they just went caw, caw...lol

Anyway, looking forward to all the great info shared on here...Earl

Welcome Earl,

If you have time listen to the two podcasts listed on Crow Busters Home Page, it will answer a lot of your questions.

Thanks guys...lots of good tips on those podcasts. When I started I thought I needed highbase 1 1/4oz shells, but have since learned they aren`t  that hard to kill. My dad passed away a few years ago, he was quite a hoarder of ammo, whenever he saw a sale he`d buy more...I`ve been sorting thru some of the many boxes looking for suitable crow medicine...ran across some green/white Sellier& Belloit boxes with the price tag on them $1.44 I remember when I was a teenager back in `70s the only big department store near here was a Woolco...one day a month they had what they called $1.44 day, there would be a big skid of these shells on the store floor, they were green with a roll crimp over a clear top, so you could see the shot, I shot lots of these out of my first Ithaca 37...they had a nasty sharp kick to them, no shot cup, just felt and cardboard wads. Canadian Tire sold a cheap line under thier own name, on an overcast day you could see the flame coming out of barrel, I always figured they were loaded with a mixture of dynamite and horsesh*t..lol. any how, the moral of the story is, we got much better shells now and considering 40yrs of inflation they really aren`t that expensive.

Earl,

They have some good reading material in both the Beginner Section and the Advanced Section on the Home Page, just scroll down the middle of the page and you will find it.

Lots of great reading...I especially enjoyed the hate mail...haven`t laughed so much in a long time. I`ll tell you guys a little story about my ancestors...
Back during the depression, my grandfather was farming.. in the spring the crows would go along his rows of tiny corn plants, pulling one up after another, eating the kernel off the end, effectively destroying the crop. Understandably my grandfather hated crows and often blasted away at them with an old single shot, mostly to just drive them away. One day my dad (7 yrs old at the time) told his dad that the crows were back...my grandfather being busy with something said, well go blast them. all the details aren`t clear, but my dad came back carrying a crow. He told this story many times throughout his life. I asked him how he had managed it...he said I guess I was so small the crows didn`t think I was a threat...Incidentally, my grandmother apparently wasn`t impressed, and my grandad got abit of a tongue lashing.

Welcome Smokin!
That story about your dad reminds me of my grandfather when he was a boy. They used to keep a double barrel shotgun behind the back door and one day he decided he was going to see what happened when he pulled both triggers at the same time. Knocked him on his ass and taught him a valuable lesson....makes a good story though. Anyways, welcome!
