After getting back Saturday from our first shoot of the season with my dad, my mom took me out to have a look at an old magnolia tree in their yard... It appears that a crow placed a pecan in the split of a limb to hold a pecan..The hole doesn't look like "pecked open" nuts I usually see in orchards but I would think it is the handy work of a crow.. The nut had to be placed up toward the middle of the split and then slide down to wedge it into place.. Think crows are smart?
The cammo blind is a two person blind..( not made anymore / company quit making them) The pallets on the end was a blind I built for me.. We had three people on this shoot. (ususally only have 2) The pallets worked well with places to stick brush etc...I used some wire to hold the top corners together..

Nuthatches will do that... if you happen to have them in your part of the country.

While I've never seen how they actually get into the meat of a pecan, I've seen thousands and thousands of crows in pecan orchards and I can't recall ever seeing a skinny one. The TCP, being learned in the 'scientific method', have been meaning to capture a few crows alive and water board them to determine how they get to the meat of the nut but that's too much trouble in the end and we just shoot them, DRT.

TCP should be running Guantanamo.

I don't have the boxes in front of me but I think they are heavy dove loads / ( not sure) .. I found a store way back off the road that carries them.. They are 1 1/4 oz and muzzle vel is 1220 fps.. I find they work really well.. I can buy them out the door for $.3334 per shell... or $83.354 per flat or $8.34 per box ( tax included / 6%)..
Speaking about water boarding. I actually did that to crow last year.. I picked up a wounded crow and wanted him to call to his buddies for help.. He wouldn't say anything as I pulled on his wings or talons while walking back to the blind... When I got to the blind and got seated I pulled his wings apart and stretched him across my thigh on his back and he still wouldn't talk.. I looked down in his beak and it was full of dirt where he had hit the ground... I managed to get both wings in one hand on the back side of my thigh and poured some bottled water in his beak.. The poor fellow got a mouth full and then shook his head and the dirt flew out his beak.. I continued to pour water on his face and beak but he would not talk.. I ended up stepping on his head with the heal of my boot to let him know I was serious, but guess I underestimated my strength and crushed his skull.. The only thing I got was a wet thigh.. True story..
