I was clearing out my deer stand a couple of weeks ago and clearing out some noisy squirrels. I climbed up the ladder with a pole saw to trim some shooting lanes. A few minutes later I heard some crows in the area. I hoisted up the shotgun and started calling. Limited spots to shoot through all the leaves but the extra 20 ' helped. Took out 6 from my tree stand in a couple of minutes. That was different and kids I don't recogmend this due to gravity works. At least wear your safety belt.
Not big numbers, but 3 squirrels and a half a dozen crows made the tree clearing a little more enjoyable and I put fox and coyote bait around my stand.
The ruts has been going on right now. No better time to be out there. I don't know if I will get a chance to go or even if my hunting land is accessable. I don't know what you heard up north. The state took a direct hit from hurricane sandy. Gas is hard to come by right now. I could use a deer in the freezer, right now there is ice and air. All the food was lost, but we faired OK compaired all the greater losses happening right now.
Went to check on my stand this week and found 7 trees blew over right around my stand. Spent about 4 hours cutting limbs. I could'nt have taken a shot if I wanted too, it was so thick. Maybe 90 mph winds took the crows west, there was barely a bandit around. Took out 3 more noisy squirrels and called a day.
When I got home all that turret talk got me thinking. I have 4 .50 caliber shells. Even more thinking, back 1974, when I was 10, my grandfather died, and in cleaning out his garage I found these under a box. They were black as coal and still connected in belt form. My father polished them on a buffing wheel and let me keep them. I never thought about that these were from 1 of my 4 uncles who served in WWII.
