Conditions I have to decoy in

This is my decoy set up, and the type of conditions I have to put up with here. As you can see, it's rather wet, and you sink past your ankles with every step. We've had this weather for over 4 months continuously now

That's quite dry compared to what I've been shooting in for the last 4+ months LOL But that's because we had a couple of days where it didn't rain all day, and it froze last night to -2c and the night before to minus -1c

Shouldn't they also be spreading manure atop that mess to make it even more appealing? Charming.

Folks here use casket shaped duck boats that slide easily over the muck to move decoys and gear around. Might give it a try. What a mess.

Red,

Now that's just what you need to get around in those fields! Just a wild guess but I figure your going to have to pay a quarter of a million bucks for that tractor. Cut the top off the cab and brush it up and you have a nice blind!

Don't think the farmer would be too happy though. My back field (barley stubble) has been black with crows last two days in the rain. Might try Thursday, as we have a chance that it might stop raining, although field will still be a quagmire

That tractor photo is impressive. I wish I could find a pic of mine from Germany, when one of the howitzer sections managed to sink a (25+ ton) M109 self-propelled howitzer in the mud, almost up to the top of the hull. Took a while to get that puppy out of the mire. It has the same tone of despair as the tractor photo of yoursdoh. Sure can change one's plans for the day.

Red,

Isn't there any higher ground around the edges of some of those fields that you could stay out of the mud?

All we could do was wait till we were sure they were dead, then drive out. Mud is treacherous and wether soft or hard, can turn to one or the ther very quickly.
The other week I walked the field after a frost and the ground was rock hard too, drive on and after 20 metres the 4x4 suddenly broke through the top layer, and sank up to the axles. Result was needed towing out LOL

Redditch, where did you train in Canada? Back in the 1980's German troops would train here in Manitoba, Canada where I live at a location called "Camp Shilo". Mostly German tank and artillery crews. Many times while we would be deer hunting in November and December we would hear the pounding of artillery all night long. We were hunting some 20-30 miles north of the range.

Not around the edges, generally the centre of the field is higher, but means carrying the kit (about 18 trips) around 500 metres across that ground to get to a dry spot. Nearly all the entrances are like where that tractor is, just a quagmire, so makes life difficult until the frosts start to come regularly

saskatchewan, it was very cold, and huge bolts would break, as would the wrenches, as the metal became brittle. I was there 76-77

Lol, I loved the crisp coldness, much better than the wet winters we have in the UK. At least that cold is dry

But at least it's a "dry cold." The decoys do stand out well, however...

So, set up at 06:30 this morning, was ready by 07:00 and 07:31 was sunrise, but they were flying already at 06:45, so missed the first flights as was still setting up. Then it was mayhem, missed the first 7 birds, because there were that many I ended up poking at them. Then got two, missed another two, and settled in. Just stopped to wait for the postie, and am on 29 birds down at the moment (missed the 30th as was halfway out the hide as he came over, and caught me by SUPRISE and the sun got in my eyes).
Once the is tie has been I'll be back onto the field untill about 13:00, then pack up as heavy rain is due at 15:00

So, postie finally came at 11:45, so went back and got another 3, but by then the weather had turned and was blowing a hooley, with result of 2-3 hide poles bent double so packed up at 12:30. Finished packing up, making a cuppa in the kitchen, look out, and must be 100 crows circling the dead ones I left piled on the edge of the field LOL
