Too close to the roost??

What is too close? I have a freshly planted wheat field on the south side of a roost. The roost starts on the north end about 1/4-1/2 mile away and the birds are using the wheat field for a staging area in the afternoon. This wheat field is in between the roost and a couple of miles of woods with thousands of acres of row crops on the south side of the woods. They feed in the row crop fields in the morning and then return to this wheat field before going off to roost. Is this too close to shoot??

From my experience yes, it is too close.. I had a very similar situation and I ran the birds away from the roost.. ( they are slowly beginning to go back to the area after 2 years) It is very difficult not to shoot them but any staging area or close feeding area to the roost are off limits...Good luck!!

Hey, Greg... I'm no expert, but it sounds a little close. My reading tells me that crows fly out from the roost in various directions 2-3 miles. If you know where they are feeding, I'd back out a mile and find some of the flyways. Being a Rook-ie for life though, I am curious what super crow hunters think.

Greg: If you are a "couple of miles" from the roost proper, I think you are safe. As long as nothing you do disturbs birds on or near the roots they should return there each day. Just my opinion. Shoot straight!!!!
