Gut piles

Haven't been crow hunting at all this Fall.  Too busy chasing whitetails since Oct. 1 when bow season opened in NY, but as I sit in my stand you know that I am observing crow behavior.  Last Sunday, I watched crows as they discovered gut piles from the day before - opening day for gun.  What an education!  As the first ones found the piles, they were using all kinds of vocalizations -- in particular, that chattery, clattery sound.

The really interesting part was that crows were then flying out away from the food source one or two at a time to actively recruit other crows in the area.  Three or four more would return, and a couple more would go recruit.  Great show!

Now I know that I'll try my homemade spray foam gut piles in my spread when I go back after deer season is over. Can't wait!

I can't be certain as to what caused all the ruckus, crows being crows, but I heard similar, amazing outbursts in the area while out on the first three days of MI (gun) deer season. The crows were going absolutely nuts. Could have been gut piles, as everybody within hearing (but me) was shooting at deer.

Are you planning to fabricate a pile using some spray foam (insulating spray comes to mind--would make nice intestines), and other stuff, then painting it nice slippery-looking colors? Sounds like a great idea.

Yes, I have made several foam gut piles, some with fake brown and white fur on the edges. I used red and royal blue spray paint, overlap and mix some color - nasty looking! I haven't tried them much, but will this winter.
