I went to Iowa about 2 weeks ago to do some duck hunting.  I went to sioix city and hunted public ground surrounding sioix city.  I killed ducks but only seen about 10 crows in 6 days!  Even with all that corn everywhere.  Whats up with that?  I see more crows here in East Tn.  And we hardly have any corn at all.  Is it like that all year long up there or do they come down later in the year?

Hello Troy,

Crows are funny, some areas they just like more than others. It makes no difference if you have corn, peanuts, soybeans or pecans. They even prefer some fields over others when you have gobs of them in the local area.

Man you wouldnt believe how much fuel I spent in search of ducks and never seen any crows.  I even went into south dakota and nebrasks.  I found duck though.biggrin  I killed my first blue wing teal.  I see them in march here in Tn but never durring the season.  Saw alot of redheads and canvasbacks.  I was in heaven but everything was locked up the last day and I didnt see hardly any ducks.  I sure wasnt used to that wind!  The last day I hunted before it frooze it was 19 degrees which is fine but the wind was 40 mph!  It was a great trip, killed plenty of ducks and I wasnt at work dealing with the everyday nonsence and stupidity.  Do you spend a small fortune scouting Bob?

Hello Troy,

Sometimes I will put a 100 miles on the meat wagon just scouting in one day. But then I have anywhere from 3 to 5 shoots lined up no matter which way the wind blows. You have to hit those spots within a matter of days before things can change.

My gas bill will be in the mid $ 4,000 range this season with the current price per gallon. Thats just going from state to state in search for Mr. Crow.

$4000 in gas represents 15,000 to 20,000 miles of driving at $4 a gallon in a vehicle that gets 15 to 20 mpg.

That would be 150 to 200 days per year of 100 mile a day trips.

That is a lot of scouting.

On average I put 18,000 miles on the pickup each crow season.

That is a lot of driving during crow season, if you can average 50 mph with rest, food and gas stops for 12 hours a day that would make 30 days of driving, almost a whole month of hunting season on the road.

NH,

Dick & I hunt all over. Some areas are close to my home, other areas are anywhere from 500 to 650 miles from my home one way. Last season I checked out some areas 1,100 miles from home, one way.

I just got back last week from a hunt that Dick & I went on. It was over 500 miles from home and even had Thanksgiving dinner with a farm family that took us in that day for shooting there crows. Lots of driving time looking and observing once you are in the hunting area. When you come back 3 to 4 weeks later you have to scout all of the first day to see what has changed in the birds movements since you left. Every time I turn around I'm putting $ 75.00 or more into the "Meat Wagon" for gas.

I enjoy hunting in different types of terrain in different parts of the country.

One other thing that I forgot to factor in on the milage each crow season. When I am out of state some of the areas are so remote that I have to hold up in the nearest town with a motel that I can find close to where I am hunting. A lot of places I hunt it's a 30 mile drive or more from the motel to the hunting area; thats 60 miles a day before you ever get started! If it's your first day in the area you can easily put 80 to 100 miles on the truck scouting out the county.

I see plenty of spots where you could have a shoot of 100 crows while I am scouting, but that is not what I am searching for, I am looking for areas where you can shoot several hundred or more at each spot; that is what eats up the gas in the "Meat Wagon"

Many of the areas I hunt you can drive 70 MPH so you do rack up the miles but it does not take too long to get where you want to go. When I'm scouting I'm driving perhaps 25 to 30 MPH while looking.
