This was taken around noon. We had 119 birds down and 109 are shown here with 10 others in the woods.  We thought we were done at least enough to line up the KIA's for a picuture. I drove my Trailblazer to Bettie's house, 180 yards to our rear. You can make out the old road to the left of the old buiding. I wanted Bettie to see the downed birds that would not be robbing her pecans and to take our picture. She was happy to oblige.

After she took this picture, I went for the truck to take her back home only to find the doors locked. Seems Bettie " always locks a vehicle when she gets out -- force of habit. Bird were still active and our guns were locked away. WE were near DEVON 2. Bettie said she would walk home and "call someone to help". GREAT. We wondered who that would be. David and I tried for about 45 mintues to pry open the door enough to pop the lock.  No luck. But then we heard a vehicle approaching. It was not hard to identify with blue lights flashing and law enforcement badges on the doors... it was a deputy from the county sherriff's office. As it got closer, we could see Bettie sitting in the passerngers seat.. .big smile going strong. Help had arrived.

Seem the Lt. with Bettie had all the door opening equipment he needed and after tripping over our pile of dead crows, opened our door in about 2 minutes. We were back in business!! Seems Bettie knew the Lt. well as she had "baby sat" him as a little kid. It sure pays to know folks in high places.

As a side note: while we all 4 were standing in plain sight while the door was being opened, crows had spotted the dead birds and were curious enough to come in range. David killed 3 more:122.

Here, Bettie and the Lt. depart. It is almost 2 pm now but birds are still coming in to feed on her trees. He resume operations and roll out another 26 for ONE stand total of 148. Guns, Bettie, tons of crows, locked vehicle, Sherriff assistance, and record 1 stand numbers. What a day.

Here is Bettie! A fine lady of the 1st Order. She is picking up pecans.. and is holding my Christmas present I just gave her... chocolate covered pecans ( what else!! ) What I have not mentioned yet is the best part. While we are busting her crows, Bettie cooks at least one, sometimes two pecan pies that she presents to us when we leave. It is an honor to receive those pies! They were well earned.  All I need to hear now is a phone call from her..."they are back" meaning a fresh band of crows is pecking Bettie's pecans and as anyone knows, we cannot have THAT!!

Once again, outstanding performance by the NCCP! Very picturesque countryside as well. I'm sure the Pecan Lady can now rest at ease knowing her crop is safe from crow predation. Thanks for posting Skip and keep them coming!

M12: I forgot to mention...  I returned to give the Pecan Lady.. a copy of the picture she took for us.. 3 days later..only to find a swarm of crows buzzing over the scattered dead crows we had tossed into the woods at her request.  They were whining and crying and swooping over the dead. Since we can hunt crows only on Wed..  Fri. and Saturdays.. I returned 5 days after we had bagged the 148 to help with all the unhappy crows and rolled another 24 birds before 9 am bringing the total "de-crowing operation" for her to 172.  I really do find that amazing for 8 pecan trees..

Skip...how did you fasten the crow feathers to the plastic (?) decoy. Did you glue them, or have Pamela Anderson blow softly on the plastic decoy, which melted the plastic, and then stick the real feathers on the decoy?

Great story, Skip. Guess the Pecan Lady doesn't know that you would shoot her orchard for free and without any gifts! . People like her are one of the reasons life in The South is so good! I.S. P.S. looking forward to meeting you this weekend if it works out.

Lone Star: About half as many! Perhaps less. We are IN the trees..one cannot swing a Metro IN the trees I suspect. We would have had to pass up many shots I fear. I do not think Metro is ideal for run and gun environments.

tob: This crow came from South America. I bought it from a decoy maker in Greenville, SC whom I visited two years ago. He had 2 or 3 of these feathered guys, and he just gave me one to try. He said, and he was right, that there was "something different" about this decoy. I do not think he ordered more of them but I could be wrong. I will try and contact him ( he does not respond very well to emails or phone calls ) and see what I can find out.

TOB: I sent you a private message ..email address..regarding the feathered bird.. check it out. I prefer not to post such info in public domain. Anyone can contact me..the same way IF you want address, etc..on that decoy.
