Due to work and school, this was my first time out this season for crows and it was a learning experience (as most hunts are).
I decided to go to a state park that allowed crow hunting which was about an hour from my home. I had been there before, but wanted to try another location where I had never been. I got there and picked a spot under a mess of trees and vines and built my blind. Excess vegetation was sparser than I had expected, so it took a while to add enough to somewhat cover me. In front of me was a cut bean field with a river behind me. I started calling at sunrise for 30 minutes with no response. after a short coffee break, I heard a distant 'caw' and got back to calling. After continuing calling for another 20 minutes and no takers I decided to try my el-cheapo backup call (also due to my primary call freezing up). Something about that call made all the difference. Although I didn't get many takers, some is better than none. The first shot was a miss (lack of practice prior to the season), the next two were right on. When the sleet began, followed by large snow flakes, the crows seemed to taper off. I called it a day, having only taken two and getting soaked in the process. But any day in the blind is better than a day at home.

The blind.

Any day afield is a great day, Looks like you were using a metro barrel. I need to buy one, you never see them on e-bay or any of the gun auction sites. After I buy a pump with screw-in chokes I guess I'll have to order a new one. I like your lab pup, they sure are full of energy. My son's 5 year old lab got killed last fall (hit by a car) a friend of his bought a yellow lab pup and decided to get rid of it at six months old because of the high energy. My son acquired it and It's about a year old now and has started to retrieve ducks.
The spot you chose to crow hunt sure looks like a good spot, I'm sure it will do better in the future. It looks like a great spot for deer hunting as well. I liked deer hunting the river bottoms back in New York. A few of the State Parks allowed deer hunting, It's all good.

Bob - that picture was taken the second we got back in the truck after picking him out. It pretty much defines his infatuation with me! It just getting now where we can leave him alone in the kitchen (tile floors for easy clean up) without him howling.

Highlander - I wasn't using a metro barrel, though I want to make one pretty badly. That tube behind the bucket is a pvc pipe that makes up a cross-member of my blind. Sad story about your son's dog, I can only imagine how terrible that would be. Glad he got another one as there aren't many dogs that compare with the lab. That spot was a cut bean field and looked amazing for deer (sign everywhere). on the opposite side of the levy that I was near was a river bottom that was absolutely perfect for deer. If it wasn't an hour drive I would spend way too much time out there.

OA - It was the pictures that I used that caused the post to spread way right. I'm going to have to figure out how to change that for next time.
