decoy spread?

Ok i have had my ass handed to me 1 too many times.  I dont have decoys so what kind of spread do I need?  I thinking maybe a half dozen and some type of motion decoy.  Whats the most effective way to set them up.  One or two in a tree and the rest on the gound around a good blind?  Been lookin at the boondockers or whatever they are called and that decoy with the three on the rotating thing.  Do these work and are they junk?  I know from experience that alot of the waterfowl motion decoys are junk.  Any suggestions are welcomed.  What do you use?  Thanks

Nice to see you back Troy. How is your duck season going?

The boondockers are the way to go if you want portability. They look really good to. Hang them around your blind or set them on the ground depending on the area you are setting up in. Just have to play with different sets till you get it figured out for your area.

Bob likes to hang his behind the blind and shoot the birds as they come to the decoys. Ours don't seem to decoy well that way very often as we don't have enough wind to "keep them honest" as he says. We find it better to set some on the ground and a few in the trees. We use full bodies in the trees and Boondockers on the ground in front of us.

Good luck.

Well the duck hunting in Iowa was awsome.  We killed a bunch of greyducks and teal.  I was very happy to get the teal as we dont get alot of them till the end of the season and even then they are few and far between.  I killed my first blue wing teal, before I had only taken green wings.  This Ol Tennessee boy wasnt accustomed to that kind of wind.  The second day up there was 19 degrees with a 40 mph wind.  We gotthe teal on the river that day though.  Now Im back in the duck desert that is east Tn.  All season in Tn my total is 3 mallards, 3 woodies and a hooded merganser!  We havent had any birds at all this year.

We do however have some crows around right now!  Im switching over to stealth moad and trying to get super sneeky.   I gotta get some crow blocks soon.  I saw some boondockers in the for sale adds here on the forum but as usuall a day late and dollar short.  We went yeasterday and every crow that came was 60 or 70 yards up, but we had alot of crows work for around here anyways.  If we would have had decoys I think we would have hammered them.  We made some silos a few years ago but they dont work all that great.  I didnt have enuff shell, choke or skill to pull those shots off yeasterday.  It was a full choke day yesterday.

This is why I shoot crows with tight chokes.  They work just great on the close one's if you have some skill with a shotgun and they give you the pattern you need at long range for birds that don't commit or hightailing out of the decoys, shots where tight chokes and 6's rule.  If you practice your wing shooting in the off season on clay birds tight chokes are no handicap on the close one's.  You can't hit a crow too hard, we're not eating 'em.  Some of the old timers knew their stuff.
