How old and or how strong is the battery in it? The JS 612 uses a single 12volt 4amp (or 5 amp), sealed acid alarm panel battery.
When the battery starts to get weak the player will work but the sounds are garbled at high volume. Does it happen with every tape? Does it sound better (no garble) if you turn the volume down? if so it's probably the battery and I would change it.
You can get a battery for it at any electrical supply store for about $15 to $18. If you are not sure here is an auction for the battery that fits the machine:
The battery is held in place by 3M foam double stiick tape. You'll have to carefully pry the battery off the foam tape after disconnecting the - and + leads. You will want to get some double side foam tape at Lowes or Home Depot, sometimes it's called carpet tape.
You take apart the caller by taking out the screws that hold the strap in place. Pull the two pieces of cover apart gently so as not to break any wires, it's pretty straight forward when get into it.
Hope this helps.

This is the old casette player that I use along with my FX3. I love the JS crow calls and have to haul it around with me becasue I can not figure out how to get the JS onto my FX 3. After the crow season I am going to figure that out. I hve them on the right format saved in the pc but have not tried to transfer to FX3 I am some what pc challenged LOL . Anyway my tapes or sound are starting to be garbled.ie sound distorted and I have cleaned the tape player but it still happens. I need to know if it is the machine worn out or if I get new tapes will that distortion go away. Any ideas would be helpful. TY Got a big hunt planned for monday. I live in Ga and it has rained almost everyday for weeks . The farmers are way behind in getting the corn out of the fields but hope it will be good for monday . Will let u know. TY for help

Glad I could help. Batteries are funny, some last a long time, others don't. One day you pick up your caller and it won't work, or the light just blinks or if they die slowly you get the garbled sound when playing at the louder setting. For the most part 612's are rugged and problems are almost always battery related.
Getting the battery of the double stick tape can take some effort some times. A sharp knife can help, just don't cut any wires. Sometimes the batteries come off easy and you can reuse the tape. Most times you have to clean off the old tape. Goo Gone helps to get rid of the residual glue.
I have a friend who is an electrician he says sealed lead acid batteries should be excercised every two months or so. Put a tape in and let it play at low volume for 10 to 12 hours and then recharge it. J/S recommended plugging them in every couple of months too.
