Well, here I am, Opening Day in front of the screen instead of going to the first set-up. Hope you don't think I'm wussing out, but the wind is 25-30 mph and gusting +. I could easily overlook the 15 deg. F temp and the lake effect snowfall and accumulation, but this much wind seemed to slow down the crow activity last year. So, waiting for it to calm down. Maybe tomorrow. Drat!
(Big Honkers: I'd be interested in your opinion of my wind assessment, since you hunt just a short flight from here)

bought a pair in 1972 in a vermont country store, the owner used a pole to get them down off the wall. best money i ever spent, it took twenty years to wear them out.
luckily no need for them here. people freak out if it gets down into the 30s lol.
windy as all h-e-double toothpicks here today.

I don't blame you any. I went out on our opener on Jan 21st. We had 6* F with 30 mph winds straight into our faces. We stayed dawn to dusk. Damn near froze.
The one thing that I learned that day is that the old Military bunny boots, or some call them Mickey Mouse boots.....they are the ONLY boot to keep my feet warm. I suffer from hypoglycemia and I have very poor circulation in my feet. They get cold on a summer's evening, so when it's super cold out, they really get cold. BUT, these old military boots are great, and you can buy new pairs for around $60-80.
In 1973, I bought my own Sorel Pacs with the felt liners to keep my feet warm on the firing point at Grafenwohr. Dyed them black and no one ever noticed. I wear them to this day on days like this.
Micky Mouse boots are also great, just a bit heavier.

I have owned 3 different pairs of Sorel Pacs over the years, spent $150 on some "Rocky 1600 gram insulated, guaranteed to keep your feet warm at -60 F......." HORSE CRAP!!
I bought my Bunny boots from a friend 2 years ago who moved from Maine to Louisiana. (needless to say he didn't need them anymore.) He wore them twice, I paid him $20.
35 below zero here in Southern Manitoba last night. Seems like a good portion of North America is a deep freeze. Still wondering when global warming will kick in.
Off Sunday morning for winter caribou to the tree line of Nothern Manitoba where the tundra starts. Planning on tenting it as usual...we have a wood stove though.

Yeah, it was a tad windy today. More than I prefer for sure. The crows you were going to hunt will be there on Sat or Sun too. So, I wouldnt say you wussed out....you just gotta deal with what mother nature throws at ya.
Heavy winds make everything about a hunt more difficult.
We are down not due to weather but to sickness. My buddy is down with the flu so we are waiting til next weekend to hit it. I watched crows fly by the house all day today once the snow stopped. Could have gotten the gear and went by myself but it's just not the same. Like Big Honkers said theose crows will be there next weekend at the spot we were going to hunt. Weekend after that we can hunt our "hot spot". Can't wait!
