One of the places I hunt has a pair of ravens in the area. First time I saw them on the ground, I thought they were turkey vultures they were so big. My son quickly corrected me as they flew off -- very skittish being observed even from the truck. The soar much more than crows. I have heard them several times during hunts and they don't come close. They make a deep "grrrrronk" sound, instead of any type of "caw." Very cool birds. I couldn't shoot one of them. Might be protected in NY, but not sure.
Ravens have a much much deeper call than carrion crow here, and are far far larger. About the wingspan equivilant to a semi auto shotgun with a 28-30" barrel, so about 50" or more

I don't have any ravens where I live in southern Ontario and where I do most of my hunting but do own a cottage just north enough from there that I see them quite regularly. Last spring when I went to open up the cottage I found a nesting pair with young chicks using the side porch as their personal toilet. What a mess, luckily for me that porch was just about to be replaced. One bird took exception to me being there and let me know it. He circled the home squawking like mad several times and would swoop down and fly just a couple feet above my head, it was quite a thing to behold. Big birds indeed. They are also protected here, not that I would have done anything about it anyways, I was just happy enough to get to see the show.
We have a lot of ravens here in Western Washington, They are about half again the size of out local crows. A couple of years ago a pair of crows had a nest in a fir tree two houses down the street, A raven took a young baby crow (about a week & a half old) out of the nest early one afternoon. The fight was on, there must of been a hundred crows after that raven with-in a minute. The crows way out number the ravens, probably 3 to 1, there's no mistaken identity between the two.

When we were hunting last Saturday, we had a raven come into our decoy spread........we saw him close. I have heard about some people accidentally shooting a raven thinking that it was a crow......................
