Where Am I???

Just sitting in a hotel lobby at around 315 in the morning, The rest of the band of brothers that I came up here with are snoaring like a bunch of Amsterdam whores and guess who can't sleep? I am in Watertown South Dakota and still 6 hours south of my destination. The farthest North i've ever been in my civilian life in the U.S. I can't understand a word anybody sais up here. My southern drawl clashes with the French Canadian accent,  but I must admit I have never ran across a group of people any nicer or more helpful than this bunch up here, amazing! We have had a blizzard blow thru south of here and we are looking at  temps expected to be in the 60's for the rest of the week. Duck killin outlook is not good. no

Although a lttle out of our element I am here with 4 other dudes and the combined waterfowl hunting knowledge totals some odd  105 years this being my 43rd. I haven't seen a crow in the last 100 miles, I am assumiing M-12 shooter has already pushed them south. We plan to hit the road north in about 3 hours and  hit our first birds with some 3 inch duces this evening. It must be the adrenaline I can't sleep, I feel like I am 17 again.... I will give a full report next week. I have to look up the crow huntin regs for North Dakota, I'm legal to shootem if they are in seasonwink

Hey Chip,

I wish to hell I felt like 17 again!

Dick my crow hunting partner has been a duck & goose killin since late September in Canada. He spends two months up there, he bought a house in his hunting area 21 years ago. He invited me up there but I just didn't want to drive 1,500 miles one way to shoot 20 ducks a day. I could do that 15 minutes from my home in Kansas. The crow hunting ruined me for anything else many years ago!

I hope you get a break in the weather while you are up there.

Good Hunting!

Bob A.

Hey Chip, good luck in your quest for waterfowl.. good year for ducks and lots of geese as well. I myself have not pulled the trigger on a duck yet but get going after mid October. Love those prime red legged northern mallards.

As for the crows, yes they are moving south fast. I did leave plenty for you guys south of the border to huntbiggrin. You will however, be hard pressed to see many crows in North Dakota except for the extreme east side of the state.

And whats with this "french accent" stuff?hmm Please post a couple pics of your exploits as well.smile

Good luck on your hunt Chip.
Are you heading for Saskatchewan, Manitoba or Alberta?
I have a daughter in Calgary, Alberta. She texted me this morning to tell me that the geese are starting to move out of the city. Which means the beginnings of the flights south into Montana.

Happy Hunting.

Yes they are very frendly up that way. I went on a duck hunt to iowa last year and traveled up into ND and Nebraska. I'm headed that way again on Wednesday the 6th.

Very friendly folks in North Dakota/Minnesota... and there is a reason why this state has one of the highest life expectancy rates in the U.S.

Chip, our ducks here in Manitoba still haven't shown up. Actually one of the bleakest bird seasons in memory. I thank God every day for the crows!

As I was headed home my youngest son 18 and three of his road dogs were headed that way. We begged them not to come, cause of the horrible heat and skeeters we dealt with. that of course was like tellin Obama to veto the health care plan. They had a cold front move thru and ended up killin 116 birds in 4 days. He and his group are good hunters and been taught right. I'm dying to talk about my crow hunt I have planned for my monday opener but refuse to!!!!! Last year I did and it jinxed me. If it is what I hope I will post pics if I remember how. As usual I'm gonna enjoy smashing that first bird. The guys I hunt with will not fire a shot til I kill the first bird. Drives me crazy!!! But they refuse to shoot til I put that first bird of the year on the ground. We are a superstitious bunch!!!!!

Chip,

I know what you mean when you say superstitious.. We have "first crow in" / "first crow down." If we fail to kill that first bird then it just "ain't" right..

I used to go goose hunting in Manitoba and I have to say they were the friendliest people I have ever been around. Everybody let us hunt their property and one even offered to cook us breakfast. Great people up there!
