Just posted on my frostbite from yesterday. It was -5 early, and my warmest day was probably 38. I hunt in the winter almost exclusively, but yesterday was the coldest I've dared because it was crow derby day.
I have always found that when I am cold and can't shake it the fun of whatever I am doing is gone. There is a certain point where cold temperatures create some danger. On the coldest days I sacrafice taking a couple of decoys in my duffle bag to make room for a portable propane heater. It has on many occasion extended a hunt and provided some safety. One has to be careful to not cross a line from desire to obessession. It is definitely not worth getting hurt over a crow, deer, duck, fish etc. Be careful out there.

-6 below when we stepped out of the truck into 12" of snow Saturday morning.... Funny thing was, we thought the Crows would not respond to a fight that early and cold, so we played gathering and come here calls. They flew by and never looked. Then we changed decoy set up, switched to a fight, and it was game on!! Guess they were pissed about the cold to....
Last year we hunted a Morning at -7 below, with a breeze blowing......that was cold!!!!
If it's really cold (single digits or below) you don't seem to mind it if A. your dressed right and B. if the birds are coming in well. If things get slow I will go sit in the truck and watch and wait for something to start happening. If the birds start moving again I walk back to the blind and resume shooting, if not I pack it in.

When I was stationed at Minot AFB ND cold was factor that had to be thought about and dealt with during the winter. Weather was very extreme there. I experienced one day with an air temp of -47, it was actually painful to step outside. Cold and wind chill charts were on display in our quarters similar to this one from the National Weather Service.
At -5 it only takes a 10 mph wind to bring on frostbite in 30 minutes. As Rook-ie knows it can happen and without much warning.
17 below with a 25 below wind chill. We made sure the wind was at out backs. It was just a couple weeks ago. In Iowa I hunt from Mid January to the end of March not a lot of 40 degree days. Many mornings we start out at 0 or below. I love it.
Well, it's rainy and 40 degrees in Upstate NY. I might get back out this weekend - hopefully, no rain Saturday. It's been two weeks since my frostbite, and it will probably be months before it is completely healed. Still numb, but should be a full recovery.
Pictures are day 1, one week, and two weeks. Just had that trigger finger out too much that day.
Thanks, HF... yeah, I'm pretty lucky actually. Doc said my heart meds may have contributed to me not being aware that it was happening, but the anti-coagulant (i.e., blood thinner) may have helped in circulation and it not being worse. Definitely can't let it happen again!
