No Crows? Plan B with the TCP
Permalink

Hi boys,

The TCP at full strength (Texas Matt, Lone Star Phil and me) along with our honorary colleague – “Longhorn Ed” – traveled to North Dakota a week ago to chase prairie dogs and other furry creatures as authorized by their state statutes for nonresidents.  Strangely we did not hear or see any crows throughout our time on station on land between the Bad Lands and the Black Hills.  Consequently, no crows were engaged on this trip.

A highlight on our drive up from north Texas was our visit with one Bob A. where we hosted a lunch at Roy’s Ribs in Hutchinson, KS and toured the famous crow hunting museum with the genial curator himself!  After the tour, Bob showed us some unseen footage of crow hunts that might someday constitute a new DVD release.  A big treat for these crow hunters…

The trip put 3111 miles on our rental SUV, a 2014 Chevy Suburban LTZ with 4 wheel drive that Matt secured in a stroke of genius.  A smaller or less capable vehicle would have resulted in disaster at some point.  We did have to spend $30 at a 25 cent car wash to get all of the mud off of it before it could be turned in without penalty, but with Ed behind the wheel the whole way, we never needed a tow truck or tractor extraction.  No small feat given the muddy conditions, poor pasture roads and frequent rains.

Staying in an old ranch house built in 1883 was also an adventure given the lack of “full” indoor plumbing.  The 2 hole outhouse was a revelation to our landed gentry.  Our fantastic hosts, a pair of local Federal Wildlife Specialists could not have been nicer to us and certainly put us “on the dogs”.  Our RRA, Les Baer, Savage and Volquartsen rifles were barking frequently, although a high percentage of our shots were muffled through suppressors.  Let me tell you, government hunters can “outspot” game vs. any of our crew even the eagle eyed Texas Matt.

After clobbering PD’s for 3 and ½ days we returned to Big “D” with a stop at Hornady Manufacturing.  Matt and I had visited his fine American factory two year ago after hunting PD’s with Skip in other parts of the Dakota’s.  We can tell you that Hornady has substantially ramped up production over the past two years, but still hand inspect every cartridge they load.  Most impressive and our tour guide – Jennifer – was a delight.  If any of you guys find yourself near Grand Island, NE, take an hour or so for a tour.

This was a long drive and I challenged Lone Star Phil at the ranch house to come up with a faster mode of travel for future hunts.  We will let you know how this turns out.  What could possibly go wrong!

It is a blessing to have fun hunting buddies who are also great friends.

Regards,

Phil has a high I.Q. if he is reading about Quantum Mechanics! I blew a brain cell or two just getting through algebra one in high school!

Bob, have you watched the DVD I gave you yet? Matt, you got different film footage than GB, have you seen yours yet. This is film footage that would have been volume # 2 of "The Art of Crow Hunting" but my wife came down with cancer so my place was with her and not making crow productions.

It looks like the "Patrol" had a good time up in North Dakota. You are all a fine bunch of Hombre's

 Hi Bob A.,

No, I have not had a chance to watch it yet, in fact, I haven't even had time to unpack from the trip!  It took me 3 days to sort through all the emails that built up while I was gone, and another day to clear out the voicemails.  I hope to get to the video this weekend.  It was nice having lunch and visiting with you as usual!  And wow, what a nice car you chauffeured me around in!

Gadget Bob,

Thanks for the entertaining write up.  Although you seem to have forgotten the part about us getting lost in black hills, and having to rely on landmark navigation to find our way home!

I believe the quality of our tap water should also be noted for the record.  The liquid substance Phil is pouring into his cup is not coffee... or tea... thats straight out of the tap.  We showered in this water, but did not drink it... although our hosts suggested that it would 'probably be fine'.  Yikes!

This was truly a wonderful trip, and a great time with friends.

Matt,

You have the DVD where you will see some really hard hit birds! Watch for the Scotch Double on crows! You will see some coming in with there legs down looking for a fight! GB has the more picturesque hunt on the river but both are very good.

Glad you guys got home safely.

To the men of the TCP,

Thank you for sharing your trip with us! I always enjoy reading about your adventures. I do enjoy North Dakota. I have not been there in about 6 years and my heart misses the prairie and its good people.

Matt, I have had "probably be fine" water before. It helps if you close your eyes as you drink it, lol. I will admit, however, from the looks of the water specimen Phil is holding it appears to be heavy on the "probably."

Nice shot at Mt Rushmore. The TCP is well traveled!

Also...

Quantum Mechanics book?

Seems like a good place to hide a Penthouse Forum.

Refined, yet delightfully tacky.

Any truth to that Phil?  smilesmile

Generally what a New England good spot might look like only much hillier here and there. This gives a good idea generally speaking only problem is for me that would be the good old days.
Not today. But to give you an idea.
that calling isn't bad at all surprisingly enough but i find it hard to agree with no face masks however...strange to wear camou clothing and the part exposed is the face? Yes i know some do that but in my views that blind used here cannot justify it but they are doing great there though despite my views...

 Hi BH,

Funny that you mention this, but there was actually no need to conceal that sort of 'literature'confuse.  The plumbing in our bunk house was so fragile, that we were instructed to use the outhouse!  And guess what was in the house... yep, a magazine rack, and it was fully stocked with a variety of periodicals of questionable subject matter.  Sure did make for alot of jokes when someone headed that way.  biggrinyawn

Notice the red rack on the wall?wink
