I spotted this fellow circling overhead at high altitude, and took a low percentage shot... I couldn't just let him go by. A pellet or two found their mark, and down he came!!
Matt are those subsonic loads you are shooting through the metro barrel? Have you ever patterned them? My guess is the really low velocity would produce very tight patterns. Seriously, with the lack of velocity in a subsonic load you might benefit from heavier pellets that provide more ft lbs at slower speeds.
Yes Pete, we are shooting subsonics, and yes they do pattern rather tightly, even with an IC. We have considered loading some larger shot, but haven't done so yet. If the factory loads get too expensive, or become hard to find, we will start loading, and experimenting with shot size.
Pete,
Subsonic data used to be scarce, but now hodgdon publishes a fair amount. The price of shot has been a deterent for us as well. At $50/bag, it just doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I have noticed that prices seem to be falling, slowly. I doubt they'll ever get back to $20 or $25 / lb.

Cost of reloading components is high for sure. Who knows maybe lead will drop to $30 a bag again. I never thought we'd see gas below $3 a gallon either. What is a subsonic load, less than 980 fps? Are they quieter out of a regular barrel too? What powders work best, I am guessing small amounts of fast burning. The more development that takes place may create a need for them if they are not as loud. We can't hunt with a metro barrel, not that I could handle one, as nh law prohibits any device designed to suppress the noise of a gun shot.
TexasMatt: Excellent TBC, excellent picture, super posting and comments. Your posts are the standard by which others are compared!! Any hunt that produces white winged crows and a number over 100 is a very rare event. Thanks for sharing..
Pete, the threshold for subsonic is in the 1070 to 1100 FPS range, depending on atmospheric conditions. Most subsonic reloaders try for 1050, so they'll have a little cushion. The factory shells we shoot are at 900, and seem to work very well. Yes, small amounts of fast powder are the ticket, some loads even use pistol powders. Yes, subsonics are quieter than normal shells out of a standard barrel, but still require hearing protection.
