I have been crow hunting for 3 years now. 2015 - goals - I am going to accomplish this year.
1.) Bring the crows in closer.
2.) Learn the art of hand calling.
3.) Hit a new PR of 100 crows in one sitting.
4.) Enjoy the time being spent in the field more.
5.) spend more time in the field.
I read a lot of the post on the Forums and they are very helpful. Here is some background on my hunting style. I like to make custom blinds before the hunts. Most of the time same day or the day before. I pride myself on being concealed. I love using a (Owl) decoy for crow hunts – could see this being a problem. (I bet, I use it to much…but I love it) I am from Ohio so Fri, Sat and Sun are my days to hunt. My volume on my caller is about medium at all times when crows are in the area. I start high to bring them in and lower it on approach to start the hunts. I average about 20-40 crows. I would like to see these numbers go up. I have high numbers of crows in my area with low hunting pressure as far as I know… I change hunting locations all the time. I might go back to the same location after a month or 2. PR right now is 84 crow in one stand. I am grateful for the chances and opportunities I have to go hunting. I am just always looking to improve! It just seems like something is not clicking for me to get to the next level.
Sounds to me you are doing well and have a plan for 2015 for further sucess. I think hand calling helps on our sets and I think it will benefit you to practice and try it. I like #4 on your list and if you achieve this one thing you will be way ahead of a large group of hunters. And by the way Welcome to the forum.
I think hand calling is the next step in my progression. I will be looking into some hand calls over the next couple weeks. Any suggestions on call/brands? I am looking for something good and simple to use and produces the right sounds. Also, I am looking for advice for hunting by flyways. (Not in a typical feeding area.) I call the crows off the flyways maybe from 300 to 500yards away. I get great numbers of crows without disrupting all the masses. It’s difficult to get these crows come in low even with the use of Crow decoys and/or a owl set up. Any suggestions here?
We don't flyway shoot so I can't help you on that but I'm sure others on here will give you some tips, as far as calls go there is a thread on hand calls a few months back you can look up it has a lot of info in it that may help you.
We have a monster roost in town! It's a wonderful set up for the flyway shoots. The roost is at the meeting of 2 rivers mouths. The crows follow the river every night heading back to the roost. Opens up many opportunities for different locations. (never setting up on the river itself) In my 3 years I have only seen one other hunter in my area. After a brief conversation he grew up in the same town as me and remembered all the crows. Now lives 3 hours away and maybe makes it up to hunt 1-2 times a year. Opens the door for me to chance locations all the time the new birds.
