Well, after buying a couple of crow calls for CrowMart...I definitely become spoiled and appreciate a good custom call (Gibson, Jack Mincey). Personally, the looks, feel, and sound trumps any plastic one.
My question...is there a difference between buying a new production vs a vintage? Specifically, the Mallardtone and Faulk's. I picked up a "vintage" Mallardtone on eBay and it sounds great! I was just wondering if the current production ones sound just as good as the "old school" ones.
Also, I know everyone has a personal preference, but are some calls easier to use than others? I find, for me, the Mallardtone to be the easiest to use (growl). This is certainly not a deficiency of my other calls....but, of me. I need to practice. Just hope with practice that I will be able to get all I can out of the Gibson and JLM.
Just wanted your thoughts.
Thanks!

Steve: No advantage to older calls.. or vintage calls that I am aware of. Finding one that sounds great is probably just a function of the fact that call ALWAYS sounded good as there are variations in call quality...except for Gibson for sure and probably Mincey. Just my 2-cents.
I used to like the P S Olt crow calls. Had several of them but all sounded a bit different from eachother. Don't use hand calls much anymore with all this digital stuff going on. Nice though to use a mouth call when foxpro is booming. I use the mourning call and have had crows come almost right into my blind when trying to locate the source.

I've said it many times and ill say it AGAIN! Try the Faulks C-50 I use alone and in conjunction with my electric calls
IT is THE BALLS!!!! I have most calls from $80.00- $10.00 the Faulk company is a STAPLE in the call industry,I bird hunt and use their Hawk call for crows and Quail, also their bobwhite call for locating quail.I have a Faulks on every call lanyard
including my duck call lanyard in case a CROW makes a mistake swinging by the DUCK BLIND!!!
They are reasonably priced around $16.00 made outa wood, you will not be DISSATISFIED .
P.S. It's a deadly DEATH CRY CALL

Very nice collection!!! Every time I look at a call I look for the two small grooves that Gibson puts in his call.. when I see them I smile because several years ago I took my father to Darrell's place and we watched him make two beautiful calls for us.. He is a true skilled artist. The two small groves are "burned" in with a simple "bread tie." amazing..
5065...The one on the far left is the Slayer Classic Cedar Crow Call (CrowMart). The one on the far right is the Lohman #104Crow Call (eBay). Both are loud. The Slayer is more high pitched than the Lohman. Both are good calls.
Mark...Darrell Gibson's calls are very nice! I just have to get better at calling to get the most out of them. Interesting about the bread ties! Custom-made calls are a world apart from the plastic, mass-produced ones.
Hizzoner...Thanks! I do like the Faulk's C-50 a lot. Easy to blow and loud. Like Bob, I prefer the ones with wooden mouth pieces.
