IF you look carefully where my barrel is aiming you will find "Leroy" my pet crow decoy. Leroy is a crow feather covered piece of plastic and he is very real looking. I really think he deceives real crows better than any other decoy I have ever used for whatever that is worth. He has a wire on each foot and I wrap them around twigs, etc.. and he sits up nicely and realistically. And yes, that's me replete with chamo Maxus, 2 Gibsons, a Turpin and my FoxPro remote at the ready! Picture was taken at 11:30 last Wednesday and is labeled properly: Two Smiley Faces!!
A week before this picture, I had found nearly 200 crows feeding on a freshly planted winter rye. After several "door knockings" we got the number and address of the owner and inasmuch as deer season is now OUT in North Carolina, getting permission is generally a formality but not this time. Our first answer was "no... I do not allow hunting, etc." Keep in mind we could hear all the crows hollering around his house while he was telling us NO. I gave up on the spot but my buddy did not. He returned the next day and after convincing the owner we were ONLY after crows ( he admitted they did pull up his corn last year ) he said "kill them all". Hearing this was tantamount to getting "permission" for whatever.. on prom night!! Fact is, I prefer permission for de-crowing operations over the latter at my age!!!
Netting in place for two blinds and Leroy in place, we started calling at 0650 on a beautiful cold and windless morning---perfect conditions. I do not often set up on the edge of a field but it was the right decision this time and when on the edge is the only time I use decoys.. or in my case "a" decoy. The key is LOTS of cover...be sure crows cannot see through it, etc. We knew the birds would be leaving to feed and would be coming from our left to right. They did. By 11:30 we had the 91 down you see here. FINE target presentations..crows doing what crows do best, all angles, speeds, evasive maneuvers, etc.. lots were killed, too many were missed.
We had planned to return that afternoon and catch them on their return trip but my buddy said he had to help his daughter do something and could not make the afternoon. Gee..looked like I would have to fend off the afternoon attack alone! I grabbed lunch, headed back to my blind at 2:15 and by 4:30 had dropped another 36 for a daily TBC of 127. These 36 contained many very close shots. I could see most all of them through holes in my blind headed right towards me.. gently flapping wings often gliding about 15 feet off the ground. I was doing almost no calling as I had placed 15 or so dead birds right in front of me, was using low volume on Foxy with the young crow distress sound..and they just came right at me. It was a true crow hunter's delight. I had blood on my ProEars, blood on my face mask, gun and remember being sprayed several times with crow body fluids due to some very close in work!
No record of any sort here.. just a fantastic crow day. I will never grow tired of the flying marvel we call the crow. I called my buddy's home afterwards and told him to thank his daughter for needing him at home that afternoon and, as you might imagine, I was quite sincere!!
Great story and photo! Please send a close up of Leroy some day.
Did you send a thank you note to the reluctant land owner with a photo showing just how you saved a large amount of his freshly planted crop? The photo alone should convince him that you are his good friends!

OA: I emailed the owner this same picture then added a text that afternoon regarding the additional 36 KIA's. Fact is, he could hardly believe the photo. Responded to me asking if my math was wrong.. that it was really 19... not 91. He really did. Needless to say, EVERY neighbor of his has been told of the mass killing of crows on his place. Best advertisement I could ask for!

I suggest that you do two things.....get written permission from the dude, since he was hesitant giving permission to hunt, and give him a basket of fruit, or maybe a John Deere cap. Each time he takes a bite of an apple, or wears the cap, he will be reminded of what a great final decision that he made!
Knowing that you are a pro, you may have already thought of this.
I can't quite see Leroy, but from your description, I have one just like it. My wife bought it for me a few years ago -- it was a Halloween decoration. Real looking legs and feet with the wires, as you said. I should use it. The only time I ever tried it I had it sitting on top of my fake deer carcass with the Edge Triple Play nearby.
I might have to enlist his help again sometime soon. We have been under 3 feet of snow with sub-zero temperatures for about a month now, plus I lost my Mom and my job in the same week, so shooting crows hasn't been a priority, as much as I really need to shoot something!
This weekend should be in the 20s. If I can figure out a place that I can get to, I may have to venture out.
Very well run operation Skip. Nothing like shooting virgin crows! I'd bet you fellas could get one more good shoot out of that location. Funny too how the landowner said "kill them all". This past fall I had a farmer tell me to "shoot every crow you see" !

Thanks, Steve... went out this mid-morning. Snow drifts were 3-5 feet deep and couldn't even get to my spot 80 yards away. Epic fail. Might not be able to hunt again this year! Season ends March 31st, but there still might be too much snow by then. I'm beginning to think that I'll be wearing white camo for turkey season in May. Oh, well.
Same here. I tried today, too. Had to get out of the house...cabin fever. Some drifts I sank to my hips. I even went to a local sporting shop and bought one of those German snow camo parks. LOL! Steve
Thanks guys!! It is so neat to "talk crow" especially nuances of certain instances, peculiar hunts, personal bests, the good and the not so good with a group of very fine like minded souls. There are not many of us pursuers of crows and we make up a fairly exclusive gangsome. I am proud to be a member. Wonder what fine report will crop up next on the board!!!
I got turned down even though this one farmer had a few thousand crows in his field-i mean it was black with crows-incredible-because his wife hates hunting!
Guarantee you this though, she ain't a spring chicken and if i ever hear she passed away or if they divorced i will be right back there! She is one arrogant witch i will grant you that! Loud mouthed old hag!
MD: I am sure you have already thought of this... but one does not have to hunt all that near to crows. You can call them from some significant distance.. perhaps 1/2 mile or so.. surely 1/3 mile.. particularly if they are down wind. So the question is... is there a suitable hiding place within calling distance where you DO have permission or can get it? Set up there, call all her birds over for a bit of lead...
I need to research that more...I am hoping the farmer two miles away allows this...I won't say where of course...I will look for the possibilities if the crows are roosting where they were last year...there is always some narrow window of hope. Otherwise all the land that could be accessible is posted....even areas you couldn't legally hunt anyways is "posted"...another area is inaccessible as it is too close to homes...might as well be "posted" but...I will be studying this some more...!
This small bunch of dead crows(eight each time out say) cannot cut it for the distance i must travel to do it...so I am optimistic...I have an area which could stand a little improving by more shooting but it cannot compare to the possibility in another area...one former area was fantastic many years ago. It was covered in cornfields. Now it is covered in buildings and otherwise hayfields..really sad. You got a good area? Pray it doesn't go the way of the do do bird! The former areas I hunted all dried up.
