M-12 Shooter’s signature statement (attributed to John Wayne) is, “Life’s tough. It’s tougher when you’re stupid.” More on this in a moment.
Another fine cloudy morning in SW MI. 32 deg., with a bit of snow during the drive out to a new property belonging to the same person, when just two weeks ago, we had an 11-degree morning. All that stuff’s behind us now and the crocuses are up with the daffodils about to pop.
Good setup location; drove right up to unload and then parked next to the barn about 70 yards distant. The yellow star is the Blind, “O” is the owl pole. Facing S, 7 MPH wind from the NNE. Nice sunrise over the owl pole (For BH, that’s a Hooter). Two really uneducated birds went down—one at 20 feet. Missed two—about par. One was only wounded and tried to get away but I got him with the second shot at 45-50 yards. I lucked out that he flew into the pattern. The blind is beneath the one crow silhouette on the small tree (sumac bush).
I tried out the new speakers. Much better than the SpitFire by itself. But, it’s still not as loud as Big Honkers’s Krakatoa. So, I still need some work. Solved the snarled-up speaker wire problem by using a <$10 reel from somewhere on Amazon. Taped both wire pairs together every few feet and now they behave. Another help was to solder on a couple of quick-release cable attachments on the ends of the wires where they (now) attach quickly to the speakers. Works very well.
Back to Ted’s quote. Seems that while I was unpacking this morning in the dark, I said to myself, “Self, where’s the hotstick?” Oh-oh, last time it was used was last Saturday about 15 miles from here. So, I uttered a few “craps” saying to self, “Well, it’s either there or it isn’t.” I decided to enjoy the morning and did. Chatted with the landowner a spell, following the small carnage, then went to last week’s setup where I found my hotstick with its Flambeau sentinel crow still attached in its extended position, fallen over from the wind. Remember kids, “Don’t get stuck on Stupid” (*Lieutenant General Russell Honorѐ) and forget to check your load plan before and after the hunt. I got lucky.
Speaking of LTG Honorѐ, this is one of the best-ever YouTube videos that shows a No-BS kind of guy Army General (and we don’t have as many as we used to) spanking the media at a Hurricane Katrina press conference back in 2005. Enjoy. Notice the USCG Admiral (behind him) cracking up at LTG Honorѐ’s handling of the media idiot. He even threw in a “Hoo-ah.” Priceless.
I have forgotten stuff in the field before as well, usually something small like gloves shell bag etc. It happens to everyone from time to time and not an issue. However if you get home and forgot your gun, well it's time to visit your doctor
Good write up as usual. We had a beautiful sunrise this morning, I thought of you as I stood in awe of the bright red sky while prepping for work.
Your blinds have been looking great! Have you noticed any bird decoying improvements with the branches on the blind?...or just the same results as noticed prior?

Glad the speakers passed inspection #1!

Thanks. As for the effects of the increased camouflage, there is a great difference in how the birds (most) have come in more directly. rather than flaring. Big improvement.
