Mild but windy and rain forecast. Still decided to get out as the rest of the week is uncertain as for time to kill crows. As the title says, packed my sons new auto 20 gauge. I had promised him that should he score 100 percent on his hunter safety written and practical I would buy him a new autoloader. Well he ended up marching me to the gun counter and we left with a new Weatherby SA- 08 20.
Decided to field test it as he has not had a chance to shoot his new shotgun. Weatherby functioned flawlessly with 7/8 oz loads of 8 shot. Very light fast handling shotgun that pointed well but it is no Browning. No speed load option and unloading was cumbersome I thought.
Shot 10 crows within the hour and missed a bunch as they were slipping back on me with the gusty wind as I was reaching a bit with the small shot charge. Wished for a 12 gauge a few times but mine were at home in the locker. Those crows that did come down stone dead were within 35 yards or so.
Rain set in within the hour and the hunt was over. Dog had a great time and did fierce battle with a winged crow! Great numbers of mallards and pintails were migrating north which was a wonderful sight as with thousands of sandhill cranes. Few pics posted for your enjoyment...

Where's my manners? Congrats on your son's hunter safety score. He must of had a good teacher. I think you made a fine purchase on that 20ga. Nice looking gun with great reviews.
Thanks for the words guys. Weatherby would be by no means my first pic for a new auto though. Wanted a Franchi AL-48 for the boy but could not find any locally. Our trap club purchased Weatherbys for youth trap and they get the life shot out of them. Keep functioning flawlessly. Sorry for the pics being askew...and yes OA, that is the little white lap dog that grew up!

Just sayin I'm up for adoption! Congrats to your Son and I'm sure he will treasure that fine auto of his.
And the blood splatter on the dogs face said a lot about the battle, he has a look of satisfaction for sure!
Great report.
Adoption...well butch we are brothers of sorts lol. Dog had a battle with a winged crow as per blood on his face. He was nipped by one last fall as a pup and is very cautious with the "live" ones. In this case he tried to grab the very much alive crow but opted to stand over it and whine. Good thing as I would think a crow could do a dogs eyes a bit of damage.
