got out this past sunday for our spring turkey opener...weather was miserable with heavy rain so i opted to hunt a hayfield out of my ground blind to stay dry and knowing the birds would be out in the fields with the weather....had a bunch of hens and jakes visit me...but no shooters for about 3 hours and i was about to call it a morning when i spoted a hen come into the hayfield with a tom in tow....i made a few calls and pissed her off and she came running to confront my hen decoy.....and her boyfriend was right in tow...when he closed in at 20 yards...he met a load of #5 hevishot to the face....he weighed in at 20lbs with a 9 1/2 beard and inch and 1/4 spurs....funny enough i had several crows visit me through out the morning as well...

Very, Very nice. Excellent report and photos!

I'm envious--my hunting pal and I went out lots and lots of times over the past two weeks and got skunked (SW MI). We think our cold spring weather was responsible for less than usual amorous interest among the toms and kept the them "hung up" at long distances when calling.

Congrats!!!smile

thanks OA..

our problem in NY is i feel the season opens too late most years and by the time it opens most of our birds are hened up so this year i used a different tactic and set out a " mega " spread of 7 decoys to appear to be a flock of birds and it appears to have worked like a charm...

going to try again friday with the predicted heavy rain...while packing up on sunday i heard 2 toms shock gobble to a garbage truck (gotta love suburban hunting) so well see if one of those two shows up...

Nice gobbler Bayman. Not too many turkeys up here in my theatre of operation. Winters are just too harsh. I did once take out a license for turkey but was met with limited success. I did however have at least 50 crows saunter over my position that morningbiggrin Keep the photos and anecdotes coming for the enjoyment of us here on the board!

Very nice gobbler BAYMAN718. Turkey season is the only time of year I actually like crows. Time and time again crows will help me locate a gobbler mid day when they make him shock gobble to their calls. After I've bagged my 2 birds I turn the hate back on and start shooting the little devils! Lol
