Using a hand call ONLY, when do you stop calling and start shooting? Or do you?

I would like some info from you more experienced guys. Is it practical to keep the call in your mouth and keep calling even as working the gun? That would seem ideal if possible. I haven't tried this yet, but I am sure I have been ceasing to call way too soon. So I intend to correct that. I'm trying to understand what is best before I do it wrong.

 Thanks.

First try to keep your call on a lanyard about the neck so my answer is let the call drop from your mouth-but that is just me.

Secondly  you are trying to talk to the crows-not yell at them...thirdly: have you seen Bob Aronsolms' DVD the art of calling crows? Sounds to me you need to. No question crow shooting is an art.

He uses a different method and as good as I am I am  learning that but for you? Get that crow tone down first. Now on Advanced techniques here you can learn some fairly simple calling and they do work! I was most dubious until I tried it....well this small group wouldn't respond but it got them into the tops of these trees then one came racing over!(Unfortunately a bit faster than my shot was)

In the meanwhiles  try this:"ca-ca ccaaww caawww " and do it twice then pause, do it again but don't wait too long.....no raspyness or "growling' and don't blow it like a trumpet. Just relaxed and you'll get the tone. I've seen and heard way too many people  blowing  with their cheeks big as basketballs and very red face....eyes bulging....blood shot...and cannot shoot worth the s*** either!

Yes there is a science to it!

I have his DVD "Hand Calling Crows." I listen to it a lot.  I have 2 calls I keep them both on a lanyard around my neck.

My question still stands specifically concerning operating the gun and the call at the same time.

Well I blow the  hurry up come here call-shoot then the hurry back -where are you going-I need you call and you need to  learn it but it is very effective. I have techniques I'd rather not say because loose lips sink ships and this is a very small state....but I guarantee you they work! How about I PM you? Yes I'll do that but remember-loose lips sink ships. You might think you are the only one but as I was to learn  there are crow hunters in all the little regions in this state. Some of us are "professionals' while others only s**** it up for everyone else as they don't know how to do it.

I'm no hand call expert as I typically lean pretty heavy on electronics. On the hunts where I have gone hand call only I don't treat it any different than duck or goose hunting. I drop the call to shoot...can't see a reason to do both at the same time. Just my 2cents.

Good hunting,

BH

Stoneage, I continue to call right up to the point of taking the shot. I do not keep the call in my mouth while shooting. After the shot I resume calling providing there are new birds to call.
