Anyone hunt the spring migration?

NH & Ted (Model 12) do but I have not heard a peep out of Pete in NH. The new guy from northeast Iowa does, his name is Randy. Possibly Jason (big honkers) in Michigan might?

 Bob,

Our NH season opened today, we have had 2 snow storms in 5 days with a combined snow amount of 35 inches. Pete and I are going in the AM ,so far it's been slow with the Maine hunting season but we should do better here with more birds moving in and lots more spots to hunt. we will keep you posted as how the season goes,

scott

A few weeks ago it was somewhat warm and it resembled old Jaffrey as crows could be heard everywhere; seen everywhere it appeared and  the next day or two it snowed pretty good and now it's a "ghost town" again...concerning crows so I am rooting for you gentlemen...I am agreeing that the snow is troublesome-not gloating. I'd love to have this area in the Monadnock valley the way it was a few weeks ago...in your area those few weeks go i bet you had tons too!

boba,

Jan. into Feb. we're hunting wintering crows. Depending on the year, by the end of Feb. or early March the numbers start to thin out and we're shooting migrants and locals. Our first season starts mid Oct. and runs to the end of Nov. Again, depending on the weather, our numbers don't start to build until mid to late Nov. and I'm usually finishing up picking corn and fall tillage. Not much time to scout. The "official" season then closes until mid Jan. Those forty five days would be excellent hunting here. However, being a farmer, there's that depredation thing I need to take care of.

If I set the season here it would be mid Nov. to mid March. Okay, actually it should be continuous.

I liked Bud Grants saying about another team not beating you, you beat yourself! So true, I see it in myself sometimes when I choke and the pressure is on in a competitive sport.

Still waiting for all the snow melt, temps to warm up and for crows to migrate in better numbers than we have seen.  When March started thing's looked as though we would have bare ground and moderate weather.  Just before NH spring season opened we got hit with two big snow storms, 20" this past Tuesday,  that makes parking a vehicle off the road a challenge. The snow is deep enough that we can not get to most blinds.  A cold front is moving in today that will put overnight lows around 10 deg, not a lot of melting real soon. Fields are snow covered, feed is scarce, shooting has been spotty.  It's been very windy most days as well. It looks to me like it will another year where the most birds and shooting will happen around the last few days of March and our season ends 3/31. We will be in a better position to tell you how it went  come early April lol.

Hi Pete,

I was working in the yard at 11:00 a.m. this morning and it was in the high 30's outside. Yesterday afternoon it reached 75 degrees! You have been getting killed with the weather on the east coast this season. Lets hope you never have another season like this past one for as long as you and your partner live!

Thanks Bob, right now I envy your 75 deg day.  March 18th and it's 6 degrees this morning with -1 wind chill. It feels more like mid January and with the snow pack it looks like mid January.  It will change soon hopefully soon enough to give us some of the best days in the field for the winter/spring season.

Brutally cold ...and while I don't go in spring any more; there has been the usual four local birds visiting my neighbor daily...

If I could get what few crows hang around here to just sit up in a tree I'd nail 'em with my 1,000 FPS. pellet rifle!

I really enjoy spring shooting. Lots of paired up crows in town here now. Numbers are not good enough to bother with my spots out in the rural landscape yet. Snow is deep too, although we didn't get too much this winter. I wont get out until early April when its a guarantee that 20 or 30 can be bagged in the first few hours of the day. All the sights and sounds of nature can be enjoyed as well.

Bob,

That's so true in anything competitive including shooting crows. A guy must learn to eliminate mistakes and stay within himself. Much easier said than done.

Unfortunately, another Nor'easter is on it's way. Calling for 8-13" of snow here in the Republik of MD, no telling what ya'll further north will get. Don't believe the snow will melt up there for a while.

Bob

Only 148 days left till season opens here again!

I miss the good old days...March used to get about 40 degres about the 16th and the dump kept the crows anchored and the local farm kept that convayer belt cranking-no shortage for the crows breakfast and supper! THen the returning crows  gave us a local populace of  around 3-500 bandits...it was unreal. Any bare ground would be covered in crows..
