When things come together, it is good!

At 6:00 am this morning it didn’t look good for the home team and looked like we would only be watching the crows from the cab of the truck.  The rain had been falling and falling hard all night and was going to continue well into the day.  At about 10:30am I checked the radar again for the one hundredth time and finally, we had a window with no rain for a couple hours.

By this time we where more than ready to get out of the damn truck and throw some lead.  We got the blind set up and I as I was putting out the last of the decoys birds started decoying in. As I put my century crow up, here come two crows right down the pipe, I tell Colt get ready and I quickly duck behind the blind and hit the Mallard tone.  That was all they needed too committ and Colt welcomes them with his 20g.  I gather one of them up and get my FF5, flapping away.

We set up with the wind at our back, which was blowing like hell.  I never dreamed the crows would decoy or respond to a call as well as they did.  I didn’t turn the fox pro on for the first half of the hunt and somewhere around 50 crows fell victim to my hand call and decoys.  We had four tag team doubles, Colt getting one and me getting one.  Not to shabby for an 11 year old and a wanna be shotgunner Haha. We banged away at them until 2:30 when the flood returned and denied me my Centrury hunt!  The counter read 87! When we packed up.  It was a hell of a good day for this amateur team of crow hunters.

Dale,

Well, you went out and eclipsed my 79 TBC hunt and I am jealous, particularly because you did it between showers! Great job!!

No matter what the count, weather or particulars, it doesn’t get any better than spending time in a blind (or truck cab) with your son! Yesterday’s hunt with my 35 yr. old son was probably just as much fun as yours with Colt. The stuff of many lasting and great memories.

Great report!

Demi

Hi Dale,

Good hunt! I bet your boy is all fired up about crow hunting and can’t wait to get out there again.

I also feel your pain regarding rain, it cost me some birds recently too. Can’t fight Mother Nature, unfortunately.

Keep after them,

BH

I have found that being in the shadows of a tree line when possible keeps the birds from flaring. with good camo & not moving of course. Keep giving it to em Dale ! Sounds like you best take plenty of shells on a good weather day.

Skip,

The first time I took it out, I would say there was no way something this effective on crows would be legal.  This past Friday though, I took it down within the first bit of the hunt as I felt it was causing the birds to flare.  After thinking about that I have come to the conclusion that it was due to operator error.  I am still not 100% clear on how to attach the crow properly.  There is only the one youtube video on how to put a bird on it and I haven't studied it hard enough to get it figured out fully.  Demi's post will help me out in this also.
