A friend and fellow crow hunter invited me on a dove hunt at his property. He has a beautifully planted field of corn, sorghum and sunflowers that draw in lots of birds. Only problem is that some of the birds are crop-stealing crows! He asked me to come up and hunt crows in the AM and doves in the PM. It was an automatic acceptance to his invitation!
We set up a blind the evening before in one corner of the field to minimize the impact on the dove hunting. He had 15 hunters coming in for the afternoon hunt and we didn't want to take any chances on scaring doves away. The blind was set in the shade of an oak tree, facing the dove field. With the FF5 Flapper and a well brushed blind, we had no problem with flaring birds. The crows came in small groups like they were on a fishing line, being reeled into the blind! It was a fun morning.
We ended the hunt around 10:00 with a total of 28 crows. Stopping early gave us time to take down the blind, clean up and have lunch before the dove hunt began at 2:00. The doves were not as numerous as in past hunts (maybe a little skittish from the earlier noise?), but I was still able to bring down a limit of 15 with my 28 gauge.
The first picture shows the flapper decoy in the foreground and some of the Flambeau decoys that were perched on sunflower stalks...both were highly effective tools!
Demi: Given how well the birds were coming in I must congratulate you sir... on being ABLE TO STOP... at 10am. Hope you had a supply of CrowZac on hand!!
Read your anecdote Island Shooter and checked out the pics. Wonderful having those bandits come in two or three at a time, the makings of a good body count. Crows are starting to hit the sunflower up here and I have a few spots lined up. Can't wait to get into a couple of these fields at sunrise.

Thanks.

Dale,
Don't let M12 fool you. He'll be sending us as few crows as possible.

Thats the general idea Randy but with 3 weeks of incessant rain here and impassible backroads, my fall campaign is stalled in its tracks
