Crow hunters Heaven!

Dick and I shot 140 crows in the first 40 minutes close to this location. Dick and I both had roughly 8 quadruples each during that 40 minute period. We shot a total of 314 crows in 2 1/2 period. Reminded me of the ole days. This was a morning hunt.

Man I need to find a place to hunt like that one. How far out from the area pictured are you setting up? What is your primary call being used?

I was roughly 175 yards away from the livestock. Mainly a come here call.

That had to be some serious action Bob. Not much time to do anything but shoot and load! The cattle in your picture sure looked content, especially since the feeders were empty and the pasture short.

How's the weather been?

Crows came to this feedlot in smaller groups or one big flock?

Ted,

We could see them coming in small groups of anywhere from half a dozen to perhaps 20 at a time. Dick and I take turns shooting, that way you can shoot at your own pace without your partner blowing a bird out from under you. For the first 40 minutes we were shooting a crow about every 15 seconds on average. We stayed in that spot for roughly 4 hours before we quit.

Ted,

I have to make a correction on the time, we were there for 2 1/2 hours not 4 hours.

Bob, I hunt feeding areas extensively in the fall, some fields have many thousands of birds using them for feeding and the surrounding woodlots for fun and frolics. My biggest issue through the years is that these big congregations seem to move about in one large group. I manage to shoot 30 or 40 and they get smart to whats going on. I only wish I could have birds coming in a dozen at a time over a few hours as small groups equal high body counts.

 Ted,

I'm a bit hesitant to offer an idea to a seasoned crow shooter, especially from afar. You've probably already tried it, but if I was confronted with that problem, I'd stay far enough away only a few at a time would hear me call. Increase the volume as needed.

We've had success 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile off a feeding area. Crows trickling in all day. Have a ten or fifteen minute lull and stupidly get impatient. Ramp up the volume too fast and the have a flock of fifty come in. That's my two cents.
