Was asked by a friend to attend an afternoon dove hunt on his property. He always has doves galore, so I was excited about the possible prospects of a full limit. A few days before the hunt date, he called and reported that crows were sneaking into the field. He suggested we hunt crows in the morning and doves in the PM. Well, OK...if you insist!!
The crow hunt was hampered by a heavy mist and a breeze that limited call sound range. In spite of the drawbacks, we were able to down 19 crows, which we were happy with. The hunt also helped “dust off the cobwebs” in preparation for the afternoon shoot.
The dove hunt came with a request. As my friend and his wife were training their 2-year old Boykin to retrieve, they asked that I hunt next to his wife so the dog might get a chance for more birds. She also asked me “help“ with her limit. Well, OK...if you insist!! Total count: 20 doves. All but one was impressively retrieved by the Boykin. A fun day with both the 12 & 28 gauges.
