Just got back from a hunting trip that included some of the elements of our past forays with JerryTomlin, the legendary crow guide we hunted with for 15 years. It was only one day of hunting, but was surrounded by a weekend of good food, sporting clays, adult beverages, fishing and spending time with two great friends.
Our hunt was in a pecan orchard that was overgrown and not farmed this year. The trees had nuts, but the crows were not numerous as the high grass kept them in the trees, not on the ground. Still worth hunting. The morning started out slowly and we had problems with some call-shy birds. At mid-morning with about 10 on the ground, we decided to put the crows on the “15 minute rule” which dictated quitting if no birds came in when Siri‘s quarter-hour timer went off. As it happened, the timer was reset several times when small groups arrived regularly. We ended at 10:30 with a total of 26 crows, many lost in the high grass.
The trip was wonderful in that, in spite of a low TBC, it allowed us to enjoy good times and great friends together. FYI, the quote of the weekend was when we arrived to the orchard (in 2 vehicles) yesterday morning. Louie got out of his truck to set out decoys and turned to me, “Demi, is there a nearby fertilizer factory...there is a very strong odor about?” Told him “No, I believe that smell is coming from the skunk that I ran over on the way here!” My truck now stinks, but the weekend was a sweet one!
