PA Crow Season - 1st day

Hi Everyone,

Went out and hunted this morning before coming to work.  We got two in the hour or so we were out.  Hunted three stands.

What kind of strategies/techniques do all of you use for early season?

I started the very first stand of the new season off with two brand new Gibson mouth calls (short magnum & long range) I just received.  I had a bird (oh around 5:15 a.m.) cawwing (just three short CAWW, CAWW, CAWW).  Not alarmed or scared.  I answered back the same exact way and nothing.  Did this a couple times (got a bunch riled up but they wouldn't come) and went right to the distress call.  It came right in and landed right next to us.  Needless to say...he's in crow heaven.  I kept trying the distress but no luck.  So I switch to Young Crow on my Foxpro and had one come right over...#2 for the day.  Then we had 2 others come in but not nearly as close.  So we left.

We tried two more stands (over a mile away) but couldn't get anything (except 1 high flyer) to come in.  You would think that since they haven't been hunted since April 6th or so...that they would come right in.

Like I asked earlier...what sort of things do others do/use to be more successful in July, Aug??

Have a great 4th of July weekend everyone.

I'm with M12. I've been told three short caws is a danger call, a warning to others not to come near. If short caws, I use two then a long to break it up.

I've heard/read different things about three CAW's together.  I heard if there are 3 CAWS together quickly...it's the Danger Call.

What gets me is if it was the Alarm/Danger call....why did that bird come in?  It didn't come when I was copying it but when I went to the Distress...it came right in.

SO, I guess I'd like to know what sorts (and I know it's tought to type the sounds of a crow) of sounds/calls do you guys use with hand calls?

I've heard different suggestions on this too BUT what is the Rally Call?  I've heard it 4 drawn out calls CAWW CAWW CAWW CAWW????

I also talked to a guy on Sunday who said he was out and he was using a baby crow sound and got 6 birds.  Anyone ever heard of doing this?

Thanks guys,

Hammer
