Any idea who made them owls with flapping wings years ago?? I can't find a name on mine,but I think I got him out of Gander Mountain?? And that was years ago!!

Hizz,

My fathers old mechanical owl from the late 1940's was made up from a real stuffed horned owl. There is a black & white photo of his owl decoy in the Beginner Section under "Crow Hunting History" The photo was taken in Brooklyn, New York where my father bought the owl from a guy who was making these decoys at that point in time.

This decoy came with a battery and a timer that you set for how often you wanted the owl's head and wings to move. It was way ahead of it's time!

I think Carry-Lite made those owl decoys where you could yank on the cord to make the wings flap. I had one, it was a big oversized owl decoy.

Bob, I see from your 1997 stats that you hunt alone quite a bit. I too enjoy hunting crows alone. Find that the overall kill is not too much larger when another shooter joins me in the blind. Companionship is nice at times but I mostly like getting away from it all and enjoying some quiet time alone while dropping crows in the grass biggrin

Hi Ted,

I enjoy the company, especially in the evening when you are loading up the pickup and it's almost dark outside. It can be a lonely feeling when you are in the middle of nowhere and all you hear are the coyotes howling! Other than that I've never minded hunting alone, it's just more fun to have someone along.

Good comment. Seems the most fantastic shots I have ever pulled off were allways when I was solo. Nobody to witness the even but me, myself and I biggrin

Yup, I know what you mean, that is why the day Tedd & I shot over 500 crows I knew it was going to be a good one ahead of time and asked him to come along the next day. Part of my enjoyment is to see a fella get a real good shoot with me. Sometimes the Gods are not with you no matter what you do that particular day.

My old pal Boyd Robeson used to get a big kick out of showing me a good shoot when I was a rookie. The first 500 birder I ever had with Boyd was very (to use Drew Moore's words) surreal. "talk about flying high"

I've been hunting with Jerry Byroade for the past 5 years and we have yet to get a 500 bird shoot together, we have had a few shoots in the mid 400 range but never 500 or more. The way I look at it is if we do we do, if we don't we don't.

When you mentioned HIGH FLYERS, well I got a buddy that hunts with me off and on both ducks and crows and I nic named him AAC AAC, he thinks he's shooting that 5" gun you were on! NOTHING IS TOO HIGH!

Remember "The Untouchables" with Robert Stack? My dad and I would always watch that show. Remember "Play House 90" How about "Rawhide" with Clint Eastwood?

Hi Bob,

As you know, but some others on this forum might not be aware, the star of the Untouchables - Robert Stack - was a fine shotgunner and a national level champion at skeet. I beleive he held the skeet 20 gauge national consecutive string record at one point.

I enjoy Clint Eastwood's acting and used a S&W .44 Magnum to bag my first deer last fall as my tribute to Inspector Harry Callahan. SFPD badge 2211! I liked his style of police work and he was good in Rawhide, too... Head 'em up, move 'em out!

Hello Hizz,

In you're August 24th post you mentioned how nice it was to have a partner with you to compliment some of the good shots.

That brings to mind hunts that I've shared with Jerry Byroade, Jerry sometimes feels as if I don't compliment him enough. The reason why is because it has to really be a good shot not a so so shot before I will say anything. If I had to compliment every shot he made that was a little harder than your average shot I wouldn't be able to talk by the end of the day lol.

Now Dick Kilbane is more like me in this regard, it really has to be a "good one" before he will say anything.

I've been very blessed to have shared a blind with men like Boyd Robeson, Jim Lundquist and Jerry & Dick over the years. I've shared some wonderful memories with those guys over the past 36 years.

Bob, your 67 and 69% averages are outstanding. Any crowshooter who is .500 and better is a helleva shot.

I think you are right the big owl decoy with moveable wings was made by Carry-Lite and was imported from Italy. My partner has one. I have seen them on Ebay a couple of times, they both went for around $250.

A fella called me last nite from Michigan wanting a dvd of The Art of Crow Hunting, I refered him to CrowMart.

The subject came up about owl decoys. He said an old Herters balsa wood owl decoy just sold for $ 1500.00 to a collector! The owl decoy sold new for around fifteen bucks years ago!

When you mentioned "Parkers" in a previous post that brought back fond memories, I used to shoot an old Parker DHE Grade bored modified & full. Man did that gun like number 5 shot for waterfowl! I used to love pass shooting black ducks in those days on Manhassett Bay, Long Island, New York. I liked the Parkers more than the model 21's.

I don't understand the prices on M21's, most of them look like the box a Parker came in, they are boxy looking and the blued frames are not very attractive IMO. To each their own I guess.

Hello NH,

My father was a big gun collector, he had model 21's, model 12's, model 42's, model 70's (pre war) Parkers, Boss's, Purdey's (big big bucks) He shot an elephant in east africa with a 600 nitro express which shot a 900 grain bullet! He used a 577 double rifle to shoot a rino on the same safari. Both the .577 and the .600 nitro were Purdey's, both double rifles. Hey, you will like this NH, my dad used to pass shoot canadian geese with an old dog eared 10 gauge Boss, bored full & full back in the 1950's. He also used to handload for numerous wildcat cartridges and make his own bullets! He loved the .220 swift and the .219 Donnalson wasp. He used to hunt ducks with Harvy Donnalson the guy who invented the wasp. He also loved the .222 man you could drive tacks with them if you had a good load worked up.

I was reading the last thread on this post about the .222 Shelin I owned many years ago. The guy who is coming over next week to trim some trees on my property still has my old .222, I sold it to him when I quit hunting prairie dogs back in the early 1990's. That rifle was a tack driver!

I have one but never used it...it is a very interesting concept though..a carry lite with moving wings..very unique and interesting. I can only see in my mind one area I could put it to practice though...hmm...!
