I wanted to ask about frocking decoys with real crow feathers. Does anyone know if there are any legal issues with doing this? I know that we can not use real owl feathers to frock a owl decoy.
You can it is legal. What you would probably want to do is stuff them. Skin the crow put preservative on the skin and put on a form, just like a taxidemist. There are goose hunters with a trailer load of stuffers they use for decoys. They have ways of doing them pretty fast, a lot faster than the taxidermist takes, and for really cheap. You will not get a better performing decoy than a stuffer, but there are some drawbacks. Stuffers don't like the rain, they can't take being handled ruff, are sort of hard to haul and handle to the field. And I read somewhere that over time the feathers will lose their sheen, making them not as effective. I think a half dozen stuffer crow decoys would be the cats meow, but I have spent enough time and money to last ten lifetimes LOL. Now you have me thinkin.............If a crow won't come in to a stuffer he won't come in to an impostor. A guy could make him a special padded individual slotted crow stuffer shoulder bag, like they have for flocked goose decoys and probably be able to baby them, and make them last good. Anyways google stuffer goose decoys and you can probably find the directions for stuffing your own decoys. I have seen the detailed instructions before on the internet. Doc
