The Killer Wad

A few weeks ago on a rather slow day I had one shot at a crow with my mighty ten bore and killed it.  While walking out in the cornfield to get the bird I found the wad from my shot.  I brought it home, reloaded it into the same hull it had been fired from and marked the bottom with X.  Today we had a little better luck shooting 12 between us.  I shot the only crow to our right and killed it.  When I opened the gun there was the X on the hull smile.  My partner quickly scanned the ground and came up with a darker than usual but in tact SP10 wad.  I am loading it into the same hull again and see if it can go 3 for 3  biggrin.gif

How's the gas seal holding up? Also it's got to have some major dimples from set back of the shot. Any shot staying in the wad? You could put a thin undershotcard to help eliminate impregnation into the wad.

Hey JD, the wad shock absorbers are a little crushed but not torn. No dimples at all in the bottom of the cup because I have to use a fiber filler wad to get the shot column to the proper height for crimping. Just fooling around because we can and because before this weekend it was Slooooooooooooooooowwwwww!

Got ya times aren't tough enough to reuse wads altho I've thought about gathering the used wads from the local club just cause I can be cheap at times.

As JD said it's been done. Back in the 60's a tool and primer parts was sold to rebuild/recharge fired primers, I think Herters sold it. I suspect it was either very impractical or a bit dangerous and disappeared.

I think it went by the wayside cause primers could be mfgrd cheap and it wasent worth tinkling with. I know some guys who still have all the stuff to redo em even the important part the one that goes bang. I think they are waiting for the apocolipse.

O.K. I toyed with the idea of making my own shot. I do reloading. I was kidding about the primers, but that's too far for me.....

The killer wad will kill no more smile.gif The shell was in the chamber when a crow came in the other day. I didn't realize it was my turn to shoot. When partner said take 'em. I lined up and my safety was on when I tried to squeeze one off.  I got it off and flubbed the shot. So 2 out of 3 it went. There were too many crows shot and shot at that day and the killer wad is now resting in peace along with with 74 crows biggrin

Sorry to hear that. But it should rest peacefully knowing that it went beyond what was expected of it.......

LOL, the lucky wad! laughing.gif

I reload for my 10 Ga guns, Ithaca Mag 10 and Browning Gold. I have used my 10 with my duck hunting loads for a warmup to duck season, but never loaded anything special for Crow hunting.

What sort of load are you reloading for the Crows?

John I am loading for and shooting an old (1893) twist barrel Parker 10ga. The load I have been using the most fro crows comes from Sherman Bell's article in the Double Gun Journal a few years back. In his table or loads it's load #79. Federal hull cut down to 2 7/8", Win 209 primer, 32gr SR7625, SP10 wad with 1/4" 16ga fiber filler wad, 1 1/4 ounce lead #6, star crimp. It is supposed to average 6700 psi at 1170 fps. It works great and is very capable long range load in my old double.

You'll be surpised by the increased effectiveness of it over a 12ga shooting a similiar load.  The short or standard ten shells will also cycle through a Browning BPS.  A hull cutter can be made from a 5/8" dowel, exacto blade and a screw.  MEC sells a short kit for loading 2 7/8" 10ga and filler wads are available from BPI, Precision reloading and Midway.  Shooting an old Ten is not for everyone but once your set up for it it's a blast.
