I like to take my dog crow hunting. Lots of shooting and dog work. the dog keeps the shoot area cleaned up of dead birds.
My last dog passed recently and I have a 7 month old that is coming along nicely. He will lie still covered in camo with just his head showing. He is not dead steady yet but he is getting there.
I have had Drahthaars for a long time and they sure like crow hunting as much as I do.
I have always heard that your dog can lose an eye retrieving crows. Is there any truth to that. I have seen some mean assed cripples and that beak could really work on a dogs eye??? Any comments???
I suppose it is possible, but I'd say a dog is far more likely to get a stick in the eye. I've seen my Brittany grab many very alive and pissed off pheasants and is no worse for wear. A dog has great reflexes and instintively will protect itself from injury. Most birds are grabbed by the back when they are still alive and the dog will get a good grip or drop it and regrab it more securely. I don't use my Britt for crows because he can't be still, too hyped up on adrenaline all the time.

whatever i'm doing i'm thinking about crow hunting
I acquired a pair of Doggles to protect my dog's eyes a few years ago. Great idea but no one let my dog in on the value and she rejected any effort to put them on. They are attractive since they have a skull and cross bones decal or marking on them.
After Gadet and I field trialed using two black dogs that I can't control, we haven't included any hounds on any more of our sorties as their presence spooked the crows that were flying. Different result when any crow, dead or wounded, hit the ground and I observed that since they hit the downed crow at a dead run, there was little risk that the crow could inflict any damage with talon or beak.
Hi guys, I'm new to the site, and slightly new to crow hunting, this is my 3 rd year. I have used my lab alot on crow hunts, but from advice I recieved from a mentor of mine I left him home and left the dead crows on the ground amongst the decoys and it seems to help. the crows definitely get more worked up with dead crows on the ground. just my 2 cents Mike
