If you can remember Ft. Cobb then you have seen what the next generation will never see, and that is, that many crows in one county! FT. Cobb was the largest roost in North America with estimates of anywhere from 12 to 14 million, some even as high as 17 million.
So did you go down there with you're father back in the 1970's?

Yip Bob, the whole world knew about those crows. I've lived here my whole life. And I'm going to blame you for educating all those crows before I got to them.JK It still was a blast and something most people will never get to see. We never had unbelievable hunts ( because we never shot too close to the roost)I think my personal best was 82 with about 150 total for 2 of us one day, but had many many days that 2 of us would kill 40 to 60. The crows there were the smartest in the world too.LOL
I used to get some of my best shooting south of the dam over in that pasture ground country years back. Seemed like 90% of the guys headed north, northwest, northeast, east and west. I believe it was because there was not as much cover over there as there was going north.
They did have some nice draws to get out of the wind around Ft. Cobb. Man were those roads a bear when it got wet!!Lots of those guys used stuffed horned owls in those days, remember?
Gritts Gresham the outdoor sports writer of the 50's and 60's killed a little over 700 crows on one shoot (around Ft. Cobb) back in the early 1970's. It was him and one other fella who did the deed. Boyd Robeson my crow hunting mentor told me that story. He knew Gritts Gresham from the gun shows over the years. Mr. Gresham wanted Boyd to take him on a Kansas crow hunt....... Boyd's feeling about that was "no way" he didn't want Gritts writing a story about where Boyd hunted in Kansas.
Well Doc, it's nice talking about the old days.
