Just tried a box of 12 ga 2 3/4" 3dram 1 1/8 oz 7 1/2 shot heavy loads AA's, really like the way they shoot. Anyone else notice a difference with them over cheaper shells ? I assume the heavy designation indicates hardened or magnum shot. Just curious of what others think. Jerry
I bought a flat of those AA HS this past summer as Winchester had a box rebate. After rebate I payed about the same as cheaper promo shells. Nice soft shooting shell, IMO comparable to Remingtons premium target loads.

M12, just bought 1 box, had a $10 instant cash card at Sports Authority, so I got them just for the sales tax. I hqve a bucket full of AA hulls from awhile ago guess I'll be loading some up. I know the 3 dram is a black powder equivilent of smokeless powder, just have to figure out what the conversion to grains is.
First for thoes wanting to reload the newer win aa high strength hulls are. 2 piece design unlike the old Winn aa hulls that where one piece compression formed. What's this mean well some have reported that the 2 piece hull could separate after it was reloaded and lodge in the barrel. Next shot could ruin the barrel. Now I load em. Use them in the winter so if I don't findem all o well. All lowbrass Rem hulls are one piece that I know of.
Dram is a old term for fps. 3 dram is like 1200 fps 4 dram is for 1300. Roughly,
Dram was used to tell how much black powder it took to move shot charge x @ Y fps. Dram is now replaced by velocity or fps.

thx jd, I have a lot of the old black 12 ga AA's, guess I'll just use those. Thx for the info on the powder, haven't reloaded in awhile, used to reload at 1200 fps, guess I'll stick with that. Thx again I appreciate it. Jerry
Black aa's??? Them must be old Dram is old school but if I load a turkey load or something special I mark it by drams It's less writing on the hull and easy for me to decifer like 2-2-4 is 2 oz of #2's at 4 dram Or 1250+ fps. But 2-2-4 is easy to put on the hull.

Dram is a unclear term it's like sayin " ish " "1100fps ish" but it prolly was a marketing scam like every thing else Must be power ful cause it says max dram or 4 dram instead of 3 dram
Even in the black powder world dram was um reliable cause depending on the grain size of black powder you can get more powder in a small space if it's finner.

Always been a huge fan of win. AA's, they seem to not leave as much residue as rem.'s do. But, I have been shooting all rem. to get one piece hulls for polishhammer to reload.

Win is loosing business IMO and is grasping for straws. After the bad hype about there 2 piece hull that could come apart. They lost alot of loyal fans. There old guns where great but now I have heard guys say the new guns are made cheap but that could be hear say I do not own any so I can't say. Why don't they just knock the rebate off when you buy em and not call it a rebate! It's like I will sell you a loaf of bread for52 bucks with a 50 dollar mail In rebate. If there only worth 5 bucks a box instead of 7 sell em for 5 and save people the stamp. Whew rant done.

All right guys, I'm confused. 1st, how do I know if a hull is 1 or 2 piece ? is it obvious ? 2nd, should I be concerned whether the hull is straight or tapered ? again is that obvious ?
Both are easy to see once you know what you are looking for take a few differnt brands of hulls out to the work bench and cut them with a hack saw from the mouth to the brass in half. What hulls do you have? Tapered hulls take less powder than a strait walled hull But strait walled hulls have more room for bigger loads Most of rem hulls that are 2-3/4 are one piece tapered hulls. I say most so cut a rem sport load gun club or nitro gold or STS in half they are one piece tapered. So are the old win aa red or grey and I just found out suposibly black tho I did not know that. But you should cut any hull apart that you are unsure about. Even just for piece of mind. The new Lyman reloading book has cross cut a few hulls to show you Get the 5 th Lyman it's 20 bucks well spent.
Let me know what hulls you wanna knowwhat they are may be I can tell /explain better knowing what you have in your hands to look at.

The new Win.AA HS phenotypes load with the same data as the old famous compression formed variety. There was an issue with the inner collar possibly coming loose but I believe the problem was corrected. I load the HS for trap with no issues and find hull life to be good as well.

In the 80's and early 90's I shot and reloading nothing but AA's. The redesigned two piece hull must have made some bean counter somewhere happy but they blew it. Some brand new shells never fired would be split right down the side and would be hard to chamber. Many would split down the side after only a few reloads. Reloaders also found the new hulls would crush a little bit on settings that worked fine for the old AA's forcing everybody to adjust their reloaders. Same year the new hull came out I got factory squib load shooting the handicap in the Maine championship and that was it I was done with AA's. Switched to Remington STS for my new shells and never looked back.
Winchester used different designations like Light and Heavy trap. Light was 1 1/8 ounce 2 3/4 dram at 1145fps and Heavy was 1200fps 1 1/8. The "Silver Bullets", Super Handicap loads were supposed to be 1250 fps for 1 1/8 but if they were they were techically illegal per ATA rules but the ATA looked the other way.
PS. 6's work better
