The Things We Do For A Crow

Well, Jon got to the house early and we took of from there.

I knew of a spot that had large numbers of birds and I had stayed off of it till Jon could come up. With today being the opener for the 3rd season of ducks, I figured that it would be no big deal dew to I have not seen any ducks, I was wrong and boy was I wrong, we watched ducks all day. So in the thoughts of the opening of duck season we figured we would do it Duck Hunters Style today. So we built a blind. We figured that we would try something new.

OK, this is us thinking.

First we found a spot and started gathering sticks and trees.

Once we had our wall up, we ended up with this.

After the wall went up, the decs went out.

Well that was all well and good except our wall one gives cover to one side. When you have birds  that come in high and circle around, they bust you and leave.  So we rethought our processes, pulled the decs you and went to rebuilding.

We went back and added the back side to our blind. We also filled in the holes with saw grass. It turned out pretty cool.

The cool part was that we waited in between runs, so the blind allowed us to take a break.

Had to throw one of me.

After watching more ducks than I can count and very few crows, we pulled out and headed to another spot. My time was short today, the wife had a coworker get married today. I did tell him that he screwed me out of a day of bird hunting and as a hunter he should have known better than to pull some crap like this during season. Oh ya, it was the first time I had met the guy. The comment did not go well with the wife. But he is the over view from the hill.

And here is Jon's thoughts on how today went.

It was just one of those days.

Probably the one and only thing I have learned for certain in my short crow hunting carrier is ... Don't cut corners on your blind. I have made the same mistake several times in the last few weeks. I hope I am done making that mistake. I feel you pain.

BTW The rebuild of your blind ended up looking sweet! Sorry it didn't turn out well.

you forgot to mention that the very first thing I did that morning was trip over a root in the dark and fall in a frozen puddle. Had my left boot full of frozen mudpuddle all morning. and btw leather gloves don't hold much heat when wet lol

today my team is battling for a division title vs the Eagles and i gotta go take a bunch of teens to Narnia

oh well.

and hey wish me a happy anniversary! 29 years today.

We had a blast.

Shane, we watched a guy with a duck boat for about an hour. He was chest deep in the ice water, jumping up and down. I was guess he was cold or he really was in love with his boat. With the movements he was making , not to sure. He quit after an hour of light. We walked up with ducks in the air. We had ducks all day, I was sick. NO steel, calls or a plug for the gun. The calls were in the truck. I did get some birds to turn when we got back to the truck and I will be going back on the 22nd and 23rd.

Shaddart, it was 28 when I started up the truck. For the last two weeks the temps have fallen out and all the water that is standing still is frozen over. But as far as being cold, nope. I had on two layers of pants before my bids, two shirts, a pull over and them my parka and 1200 Lacrosse boots on. No I don't get cold, I melt.

We built a blind, twice with additions, called in birds, watched ducks till I wanted to puke, got a case of CHS@!. I had a blast.

I did see Jon get cold. You can not step knee deep with out some type of water proof clothing or boot on. It just does not work out to well. Especially if you go through ice first.
