Around the first of the year, I am told the cost of steel shot will go up 3% and lead 5%. And a bit of info I did not realize but was also told: lead makes up 47% of the cost of a shot shell.
I still do find it hard to believe a guy can buy a box of premium trap loads for 7 bucks. Tough to roll your own for that price. I remember thinking back in the early 1980's 10 bucks/box for duck loads was a good deal. That was back when a simple base metal like lead came in at 5 cents/pound! Thanks for the info. Skip.

Skip Not doubting your info but lead does not cost 47% more than a steel shell. But as far as price increase I don't doubt that.
M12 Rolling your own can be done for under 5.00 a box pretty easily. And like said before what you load is like top dollar loads for walmart prices. I think my reloads are around 4.00 a box. There are a few ways to shave $$$ off the price per box.

A friend of mine has a small gun shop above his principle business. He sells reloading stuff for close to his cost. Magnum shot just recently went from $32 per 25lb bag to $36. Retail stores are about $40. Commodity prices are headed up including lead. Additionally it takes energy to make lead shot and transport it. Gas and Diesel as you know is up too. I suspect it won't be long before we see the $45-$50 a bag retail price again as we did in 2008. (PS. The gubbimint says there is currently no inflation).
An easy way to calculate the cost of a box of reloads is the calculator found here:
100 % right that the lead shot is the most cost in reloading but what I mean is that you don't see that reflected in the cost of loaded ammo Steel isnot half the price of lead at least not that I have seen yet.

Great Britain, beautiful place to visit but........Us yanks said we weren't going to pay those taxes back in 1776 and reaffirmed our position in 1812
Mr. jd1983, Please give us a breakdown, by component, of how you can load top dollar 12ga. shotgun shells for around $4.00 per box. Please include shot weight and cost, powder used including weight and cost, wad used and cost, and primer used and cost. I'd like to load shells for around $4.00 per box my self. Let's assume that you have the empty shell at no cost.
Ken Buying my powder @64 bucks for 4 lbs of red dot and primers for bout 34 bucks a thousand and wads at 11 bucks per 500 hulls are free and shot at 34 bucks per 25 lbs and loading 1-1/8 oz loads I used a reloading calculator on line to come up with 4.70 a box of 25. Now if I bought in 8 lb jugs and primers by the 5 thousand and wads by the case I could save a few cents more And if I would have bought my shot with a gun club at 29 a bag it would be less also. And if I drop down to 1 oz of shot it would save more also. You dont need to buy in major bulk to save This is all magnum lead shot. And I figure a top notch box of shells to be round 7-8 bucks may be 6 on sale. Besides I enjoy loading my own. Does this help? Google -Shotshell reloading calculator The x10ring site has a good one ( or something like 10x)

I'm with you jd. I may not be able to beat the price of wally-mart. But for just a bit more I get high (top) quality loads at half the price of the expensive stuff.
Thanks jd1983 for your followup to my question. I did'nt use the on-line calculator to calculate my cost for reloading a box, as the numbers to do this have been stuck in my head since 1968, when I started reloading shot shells. The calculator is a useful tool, and will help others in calculating their cost to reload . A good suggestion on your part! I am a little jealous of those prices you are paying for your components, as I pay substantially more, so I rarely buy reloading components. Just 'taint worth my time and effort to save only $.50 per box.
I calculated your cost, using 19 grains of powder, which is my estimate, at $4.88 per box. Still a good price for a box of roll-your-own crowbusters!
And thoes numbers on powder and primers are from what I picked up at gander mountain if one was to go with promo in a 8 lb jug and could get primers cheaper they could save even more. By the way I think I am loading around 17 grains. Any way cheapest box of shells round here not counting the walmart cheapies is about 6.50+. So I figure I am saving at least 1-2 bucks a box. And with a single stage Mec 100 rounds an hour is easy.
I talked polish hammer and watch em fall to get into rolling there own have not heard how they are doing on it.

Shot has jumped in price and I also noticed different web sites out of stock. Are they finding it harder to get the lead or my theory many times is they sit on stock and wait for the price increase.
