Bob, you know, the more I learn about this sport, the more I'm surprised that I've even been able to kill any. :)
An old guy told me once several years ago that a dead crow laying on the ground would scare the others away. All these years I've been picking them up as I shoot them so they weren't visible.
I wouldn't be to hard on yourself. It does sound logical that since crows are one of the smartest birds on the planet that they would be scared off at the sight of any dead crows.
What happens is that when they see a bunch of dead ones they can tell long before they get into range that the birds are dead, but there temper and curiosity get the best of them! If you want to see a very good illustration of this go to the Crow Mart Store and buy a copy of Crow Shooting and The Art of Crow Hunting, both are dvd's, money well spent!

Kev, I used to do the same as yourself when it came to fallen birds. Until the last outing with Jon. We were walking out and had left a bird out in the open. The birds in the air went nuts and I mean defcon 5 kind of nuts. That one dead bird pulled in more birds than we had called in that morning. Once a few birds had found that one dead. They called in birds from the next county.
When the crows get worked up at the sight of some dead ones is the perfect time to use the "Mourning Call" some old timers call it a "Sorrow Call" but it's one in the same. I've shot thousands and thousands of them when this occurs in the field.

bob- i bet the the Stock Market 'shares' for Federal Ammo go UP after every one of your hunts!!! i shoot a Beretta Urika 2 (Max 4 Camo) myself & i was just wondering if u ever have trouble removing those nasty -lock washers-on the gas valve assembly when u clean your guns? and how often(app. how many rounds) do you strip yours down for a more MAJOR cleaning like that.i know that Federal tends too be some- what of a dirty ammo, and u shoot more in one day than most shoot in months so i was just curious?
I don't take any of my Beretta's apart unless I have shot 1,000 to 1,500 rounds through any one of them. I do spray the trigger assembly and action bar out with carb cleaner plus scrub the chamber with a 10 gauge brass brush to get the plastic residue out of the chamber after 1,000 to 1,500 rounds.
