so i want to really start hammering the crows this year, i have 7-8 spots to make stands and we hunted them all today and had action at each one. we used a fox pro "crow fight" at all the stands, and the crows came rushing in. we were shooting 12 gauges with 2 3/4" #6's. we managed to get 3
but we had several incidents where we would see poofs of feathers and the bird would fly off, we then switched to 3 1/2" BB and #2 steel shot, when we did that the birds crumpled right up, even at 50-60 yards. we used the dead crows at decoys at the next stand but didnt have any that wanted to land, however they circled real low. so okay here are my questions:
1: what loads do you guys shoot for crow? are goose loads too much? do you think they are a good idea?
2: anyone ever try dead crows for dekes? i was thinking about skinning them, salting the hide, sewing it back up and filling with expansion foam, wither that or make plywood sillouhettes. also, i want to get about a half dzn plastic full body dekes, how many do you guys usually use at a stand? we also have an owl we are going to use
3: anyone ever use a flag like we do goose hunting to attract attention?
4: we have only used "crow fight" on the fox pro, but, does anyone just use mouth calls with any luck?
thanks a ton guys sorry for having so many questions, but man is hunting them fun! just like duck hunting, except better!
You will get a variety of answers to this question depending whom you ask.
I can only speak for myself here, 7 1/2's and 8's in a trap load (3 dram) "in the right hands" will stone crows graveyard dead from point blank on out to beyond 50 yards. Now when I say 50 yards, thats a long long way, most shotgunners do not have the skill level to do much good past 35 yards.
I've killed more than my share of crows over the years with just a trap load, thats all I use on crows.

Ditto with Bob, 7 1/2 and 8's The dead works for deeks No on the flag, to much movement, they will pick you out Change up the sounds, they will get real smart, real fast. And learn to hand call
1)I've crushed them at 50 yards with modifed and full with 7 1/2 & 6's. a large amount of beebees in the wing bones so these were not luck shots with 1 beebee to the head. The light load will perform.
2)I've killed many using dead crows. When I was 12 years old my friend and I cut out cardboard crows and painted them black. We hung them from trees and let the wind blow. We used a hand caller only then. It was 1990. Crows attacked the cardboard. Just my experience...worked for me then
3)I've had good experience with all calls. Crow and owl, frenzy, single excited,....Death cry of crow has brought me more anger on the crows. With death cry I have had more crows come back to me over and over after firing several shots.
They're little angry attackers with "Death Cry"
Good Post! Brian

okay thanks guys, we have had sucess hand calling before actually, just liked using the foxpro for the convienence of it, i was thinking of building some blinds, anyone do this? we mainly just ducked into brush to shoot. okay instead of a flag how about a wing on a stick staked in the field?
one more thing, im sorry, lol someone told me a secret that he uses, he asid he takes a garbage bag, a couple grocery bags, and maybe a mcdonalds bag and tosses them out in his decoy spread, he said this simulates the crows eating or getting into garbage, anyone ever try this?

speaking of a death cry, one time my buddy said he shot one and it made a weird noise, and then 2 other crows came down and carried it off when it was basically dead, ever have that happen?
