My new homemade E-caller!

This is my new play pretty! And man is it LOUD!!!biggrin

If the speaker is pointed at you, even 50' away, you can not stand it long when it is cranked up. It is deafening. Sunday morning I called crows from over a quarter mile calling into a 15 mph wind. It was amazing. I was calling with the wind till the birds stopped coming. Then I turned the speaker into the wind pointing diagonally across a 40 acre section of field. There were no birds in sight nor could I hear any crows. About 4 minuets later birds started coming in from across the field coming down wind. I was amazed I could get birds to respond from that distance and through the wind. I suspect these birds were feeding in the field across and down the road. if that is so, it would have been closer to 1/2 mile. I don't know this for sure as there were some midsized pines between me and the other field.

I built it to push two of these speakers as this is a duel amp. I only had one speaker so in essence, it is only half the volume it can be. I will add another speaker later. One side of the amp is turned off and has nothing hooked to it.

It is powered by two DeWalt 18v batteries run in series. I only had 1 hooked up but it did not even come close to draining the battery. It still had over 19 volts left after running it for an hour and a half.  I believe it will run all day and then some on a charge.

All that is left to do is add a speaker and a little paint. I may add a wireless mic later but for now it works well.

Hey guys, new to the forum! 8fisherman, maybe I missed it but what amp are you using? I'm trying to make my own homemade e caller and have that same speaker if thats the one from RadioShack but I am lost on the amp. I don't really want to use the one from RS if it has to run off of a 9 volt. I've read that the Canuk193 amp is good to use? I have a 12v SLA battery that I used to rig up a motion decoy for duck hunting that I think would last longer. I also have a Dell music jukebox mp3 player that i've had for years that I think would work. If you guys have any advice I'm all ears! Thanks

The amp is a Canuk. Can't remember the part # but it is a dual amp. It will produce 20 watts per channel I think and running it on the 18v Dwalt drill batteries you get the maximum from it. It will make you ears bleed. I have since add a speaker to the other side of the amp.

If you order one, make sure you get one that is preassembled. Otherwise it will come with a printed circut board and a baggie full of parts. Been there, Done that. Not good. no

That's a beast... I have the same horn, but just use this Radioshack mini-amp -- just a 9v battery, but pretty compact and it seems to crank well enough. My problem is concealment and shooting. Painted similarly then with a camo head net over it. Works for me straight from my smart phone. Also have a 100 ft extension cord but it freezes and breaks in the cold weather.

Yep, that one works, I have one. I wanted more and clearer volume that is why I went to the canuk. Start with the small one and you can always add to it later and the small amp will be a good backup.

If I build another one I will probably just buy a car stereo amp. That would be simpler.

That is a pretty awesome looking caller! It looks like a nice setup with the box containing everything and those two batteries running it all.

But seriously...every time one of you guys post cool homemade gadgets on here it makes the wheels in my brain start to turn and that usually ends up with me starting a new project that I have no time or money to complete...

Great looking setup. I was wondering if you were using an mp3 sound file?  What are you using to acturally play the sound?

JS sounds modified into a 30 minuet sequence using Audacity. I play the sound on my phone. I don't have a wireless mic, I use about 75' of wire.

That's sweet....exactly what I do when coyote hunting.  I've been looking for some sort of small amplifier for my speaker.  The amp you bought from Radio Shack...does it have external jacks to plug my phone and speaker into?

Yes, both are 1/8" which is the standard stereo size.

RadioShack® Mini Audio Amplifier - RadioShack.com

Most local stores stock this item.

Great...this is it.  So all I have to do is plug the mp3 player into this along with my speaker and play?

Yes, Just plug it in. You will need a short "Male to Male" jumper to connect the two.
