I was digging around on Shotgunworld.com and found this thread in the FAQ's. Thought y'all might like to read this. I found it helpful.

Q. How do I estimate shot spread at a given range?

A good rough rule, is when fired from a full-choke gun, the pattern will spread roughly 1" per yard. When fired from an improved-cylinder gun, it will spread roughly 1 ¾" per yard. Other
degrees of choke will spread proportionally.
Gauge has no affect on this. Larger gauges only fill in more of the pattern with shot.

Lead the bird, keep the gun moving, keep your head tight to the stock, pull the trigger. Give me a tight choke on every shot because when their close choke don't matter but when they are far the tight choke helps.

and another thing too concider here is how the gun manufactures are screwin around with Over-Boring and things like the new Crio chokes.New Benelli's are typically shoot one choke tighter were-as Beretta's like the Urika 2 that are 'Opti-Bored' shoot alittle more open.

My M-1 shoots tight. It is 12 years old and my Imp. Mod. patterns around 73% at 40 yards. 70% is supposed to be a full choke.

8Fisherman, I too use a M1 also with an Im Mod choke. I have patterned it but have not figured out the % at 40 yards. I used to know but I havent done it in a while as I usually just shoot a pattern then look at it for holes and the fringe for eveness. Whats the formula?

My gun is a 1998 model M1 but I put a 2005 model 28" M2 barrel on it. I couldnt find hardly any choke tubes for it locally, so I bought an undertaker turkey choke for high density shot on clearance at bass pro for 9 bucks and change for a optima plus barrel. They have the same outside dia. and thread pattern but since the  bore on the optima plus is bigger the tight turkey choke is accually around .027 in my gun which is somewhere between Im Mod and Lite Full. I love to pigeon hunt also and like a little tighter choke for them as they are harder to bring down than a crow and when they turn on the afterburners they get out there quick plus the trees are all tall here in TN and the crows are usually flyin high. You gotta reach out ant touch'em. We do real good to kill 50% of the birds we shoot at cause most shots are long. Just learning to hunt them willy crows and we will figure out how to get'em in close before long. (Hopfully) smile

Interesting thing 1" of spead per yard for full choke, 40" at 40 yards. What would that make Im Mod? Like maybe 35" at 40 yards. Im gonna have to get out there and pattern my gun soon. Got me curios. Gonna wait till it gets a bit warmer though.

Troy,

Most charts show if 70% of the pellets are inside a 30" circle at 40 yards it is a Full choke. This would put the total pattern size around 40". If I am shooting quality trap loads, my Imp. Mod patterns at 73%. If I shoot cheap shells it opens up a little.

I have seen a chart or two that list a full choke at 75% and Imp mod at 73%.

First time I have seen that one.
