Season Totals

Well I'm done for the season.

Went out on 28 hunts and shot 4,762 crows, the shoots I shared with Dick bring the grand total to 6,574 crows. I don't have an exact figure yet on how many Dick shot alone this season. I know his largest solo shoot this season was right after I headed home after breaking my rib in December; he shot 555 by himself the whole day. I don't count the ones Dick shoots by himself, just the ones with me.

Been on 1,412 crow hunts in 37 seasons.

In 37 seasons the "Grand Total" for me is 139,390 crows.

In 37 seasons the "Grand Total" with help comes to 211,975 crows.

Our average per shoot was 235 crows per hunt. 6,574 divided by 28 hunts.

Our largest shoots (have to be at least 100 birds or more to get into this colum)

105 , 150 ,  380 ,  218 ,  375 , 711 , 834 , 273 ,  119 , 287 , 183 , 294 , 589 , 280 , 233 , 170 , 207 , 161 , 151 , 100 ,  and 247.

My dear Lord man, you've killed more crows than I have clay pigeons. I just started hunting them seriously this year and only after duck season closed. Thats about to change! I only hunted one day with a e caller and where I hunt here in east Tn. I figured real quick that Im gonna have to run and gun. My season total is 15 I hunted 4 times. Kinda sad aint it. I promise next year it will be much higher. Gonna get hardcore on'em!

By my count, That is 21 out of 28 hunt with over a 100 birds. That is impressive. I have probably been on 28 hunts this year and only one would have barely made that list. My hat is off to you.

Good job Bob.

I am glad I don't have your ammo bill!smile

Wow!

That's a lot of biomass, Bob!

There are a lot of other varmints out there - why limit yourself with crows?

Hey,

I wanted to share something with you guys. The article that was in the Kansas City Star about a week and a half ago, well I got my first piece of hate mail on a post card! On the other side of the coin I had some very positive phone calls from older guys who used to hunt crows many years ago. I had phone calls from farmers who saw it in the paper where I used to shoot with Boyd Robeson some 30 odd years back. It was really very nice talking about old times with guys that I haven't seen in many years because the crows no longer use the area.

That's great Bob that the guys you knew years ago took the time to call you. Must have really been nice to catch up with them after all the years.

With all those crows laying out there after killing them, I wonder how many Fox, coyote, etc.. raised young on all that food?  Would be interesting to track something like that.

Hi Kev,

I doubt they would be raising any young at this time of year, perhaps in the early fall. But... it does help sustain them when it's hard to find food at this time of year.

That's awesome Bob. I would love to have even one hunt like that. I've been out 14 times this years and just broke the 300 mark for the year this morning. Best day was 51. When is the season open in Kansas?? Here in Indiana it is open July 1st through August 15th and then December 13th through March 1st. We only got a couple weeks left here.

Bob, Good point, I'm thinking of our season when it's open in the summer.

Great shooting Bob, how does this season stack up against other seasons. Did the broken rib cost you many hunts? And what did the hate mail say?

To Big Honkers & Texas Matt,

I don't remember it word for word but this is pretty close, " Oh, so you're zealous about hunting crows are you, thats because they are smarter than you. Why don't you come up to Nebraska and just try shooting crows on our farm, you wouldn't get any! The only reason you hunt them is because you are jealous of them. " And on and on!

I just used the post card to light the fire in the fireplace last nite!

Hi Matt,

If I didn't break a rib in december ( it set me back 3 weeks ) I had a very good shot at breaking my 1997 record of 6,349 crows in one season. But those are the breaks lol ! Ya just have to roll with it is all, I'm just happy to get out there and do it.

Hey Bob,

Just curious how you use your counter? Keep it in your pocket or on a lanyard or what? In the heat of the battle, I can't keep up with how many shells are still in the gun. With that many the action must be fast and furious. How do manage to keep track and reload and hand call all at the same time?

Bob,

I think I would have saved that postcard in my hunting journal. Not sure why, but it would have made for a good trip down memory lane in a few years.

It sure would have been fun to reply to that postcard with a picture of a jumbo sized pile of crow-debris titled "Nebraska crows that were not too smart." Nothing good would have come from it though and you probably did the right thing.

Hello Greg,

I hang it up inside the blind for easy access, and yes, it is on a lanyard. I sometimes have to wear it around my neck if I'm in a makeshift blind. I have it painted flat black so there is no glare from it.

All I have to remember is "shoot the crow, hit the counter, and load the gun" that way I don't get messed up. There have been times when a guy wonders, hey did I mark that last bird on the counter?

Hi Matt,

When you asked how this season stacked up against other seasons I will give you the crows I've shot from 1997 to the present day, they are as follows:

1997 - 6,349

1998 - 4,840

1999 - 3,535

2000 - 5,094

2001 - 2,061 I didn't hunt much that season, I needed the money to produce The Art of Crow Hunting.

2002 - 5,197

2003 - 3,220

2004 - 3,799

2005 - 4,076

2006 - 3,309

2007 - 4,008

2008 - 5,279

2009 - 4,164

2010 - 4,762
