I was driving along this past Saturday about 1/2 mile from my house. As I passed a group of trees close to the road I could hear many crows screaming, even through the closed windows of my truck. So I turned around and drove back and here are these 2 crows on the ground that were causing all the "crowd noise."
At first I thought these 2 were breeding. But then as I was snapping the photo I notice that the one was standing on the other's neck and driving his beak into the top of the other's head. There was blood and feathers on the ground there.
Seconds after snapping the pic, the one standing flew away with all the others in the tree. Then the one on the ground which I thought was dead stood up and staggering like he was drunk, then he flew away too.
Anybody ever see anything similar to this? Photo isn't great, because it was just my cell phone and then I had to zoom in on it which added to the blurriness.

the one that had a butt kicked wasn't flying great, but he disappeared on the horizon still going.

Just like if he had been hit with a load of 8's LOL!!!!
Sorry couldn't resist I am guessing the fight was territorial but that is just a guess. Perhaps an adult kicking the butt of a younger challenger in the breeding season. Or maybe fighting over food.

I didn't see any food.......but that one on the bottom had his ass handed to him.
I saw a fight like that in front of my house over the weekend! It was pretty cool. There was not blood though, I think the ones I saw were just play fighting/sparring. One was winning though they were scrappin on the ground then the one would pin the other down then let him up. They did this about 4 times while 1 other just watched. They were all 3 on my lawn for this. Then they all just flew off like buddies.
I use to live under some huge pines that crows used for breeding and nesting... you could always tell when the breeding season had begun because the crows would beat the CRAP out of each other...
I got to witness some epic aerial dogfights... over the course of a couple months the crows would go from meticulously groomed plumage to looking like they flew a bombing run through 100 miles of flack... I've seen crows missing so many flight feathers I could not believe they still had the ability to stay airborne.
If I had to guess, I would say the battle you witnessed was a display of dominance.
