No Troy you didn't get me, joke is on you actually. I have rec'd a number of e-mails agreeing with me about the greater effectiveness of 6 shot at long range. You'd be surprised to hear the details, one guy has even hunted with one of the "giants" (and if he wants to chime in openly he can do that but I won't say who). My whole point is I know they work better. I son't expect to change anyone's mind or steer them away from their pet load (or easily available 4 pack). My point is they work better on the tall ones and just as good on the close ones and maybe others would try for themselves and see what happens. The pattern tests and we have done lots of them show the biggest negative we hear against using 6's is lack of pattern density and that is not the case with a tight choke.
LOL...nice post Troy. I'm surprised it only had 67 views.
There's something to be said about how many chimed in about this topic over tha past few months. I never kept track of who used what BUT I would bet that 75% or more than commented used smaller shot. I don't think that is a coincidence? I've tried Shur Shot Heavy Dove 6 and didn't get the results I get with 7.5 or 8. Heck, I even tried #4 High brass (GREAT deal at Wal Mart one time...$4,96/box)...same results. Although, I would think with 4 shot you'd be able to whack them at 70 yards....
Until I get a quarter/or half as good as Tom Knapp...I'll stick with MORE. It doesn't bother me if they come down alive. We (for the most part) put them out of their misery. If they hop off too fast...then I'm helping the yotes, raccoons and foxes out..haha.
PH: I think you have summed up the essence of all the fine postings on the subject quite well. I bet most learned something.. or is now going to test something or try something they might not have prior to all the comments. That makes about everyone.. a winner here certainly including me.

That's my whole point, I am going stick wiith more, a shotgun capable of having greater ie more range and producing more dead crows and fewer flying crips.
Yes most people use 7.5's and 8's but the real question is why; truth be told it is because factory low brass/target loads are more readily available and less expensive.
You tried Remington Shur Shot loads in #6, seriously you tried the worst performing factory loads bar none. We refer to those things as "Black Beauties". That is why I said it is important to use quality loadings not cheapos. Those who reload for trap and skeep will indeed see a big jump in performance by switching to magnum #6 shot in their pet trap and skeet loads.
Skip. thanks. I am guessing most won't try and if they do, I hope they stay away from those Remington economy loads. I think those who are curious with an open mind may find a more effective load if their gun patterns it well and be very pleased.

NH,
I have searched around and I cannot find a single trap load equivalent with a one piece wad in 6 shot. As far as I can tell the only option to shoot 6's is to hand load. If someone knows of a good load let me know.

Reloading #6 is about your only choice (and best choice) for quality comparing to AA and STS, Nitro 27 etc. Do you reload?

No. I own a bussiness and have 6 kids 12 and under. I don't think I have the time.

Well 8 I suggest a hunting partner who reloads and you keep him in the components you need
I shot a box of his bone crushers last year. They were 1 1/8 at 1450 fps! They were deadly on crows but I would not want to shoot many of them. I may talk to him about loading some up though.

I personally would probably not shoot if I could not roll my own,but that's me,I have been doing it for 35 years,I have no kids, and my sweetie loves when I disappear to my reloading MAN CAVE. But reloading is not for for everyone, especially given the pricing that some have posted on here,Wow,but I get all my hulls for free and me and four friends pool our buying for shot shell components,so we are still getting the stuff cheap, even with the hazard charge for shipping.

What would you recommend for a recipe for a 6 shot load if Shur Shot are junk? I shoot a 12 gauge and I have a ton of 2 3/4 hulls and have a 1 1/8 charge bar.

Powder? Wad? Primer?
What kind of speed should I be expecting.

PH I sent you a PM. Those Remmy Shur Shot loads really are junk, I bought a bunch of flats in 6 and 8 a few years ago when on sale at Dick's Sporting Good. The 6 was junk on crows and the 8 junk at trap.
In a nutshell take any good 1 1/8 load you would use for trap. I like the 2 3/4 dram loadings, 1145 fps. The #6 pellets give the inertia to kill in spite of the lower muzzle velocity. The benefit, less recoil and the lower MV and chamber pressure helps to keep the patter tight. I always use Green Dot powder, have for more than 25 years. Gives tight patterns and lower felt recoil. In the AA case, it's a WW209 primer, 18.5 grains of GD, AA white wad and 1 1/8 of hard shot. In the Remington hulls, STS/Nitro it's a Rem 209, 18 grains or so (going on memory) and a Fig 8 wad. The real bargain is to reload those Federal hulls from the promotional 4 packs. You can find those hulls at every gun club as everyone simply throws them away. Use Federal 209A primers in those, they take a little more powder, 20grains, and the Federal S3 wad for 1 1/8 ounce.
Buy a bag of magnum six shot, load it all up and shoot some crows with it. Use up the whole bag on crows, then you can make a fair comparison based on your own gun and shooting conditions. I think you'll like it, maybe not, but at least give it a try.

Kinda of topic here, but PH mentioned his charge bar.Anyone who is reloading for shotguns, you should give the new adjustable charge bars a try,so much easier to get accurate charges on your propelant and shot. I have one on both of my Mec 600 presses and would not go back to the old bar and bushing for nothing.
I have an adjustable charge bar that adjusts for shot but uses MEC bushings. It's great for loading Bismuth. The MEC bar and bushings allow you to change loads faster but you can only load for what you have in the way of bushings and bars. Using a adjustable bar does demand you have aother reloading tool, a scale, either beam or digital, as you have to weigh the loads of both powder and shot before usiing it, especially powder.

wouldn't these do it if you don't have a reload setup?

I don't think the components are the same quality as what we have been discussing. I didn't see the components listed, But I doubt it had hard shot and a good quality one piece wad.I have shot Estates version of these and they preformed OK but not great.

With all due respect, why are Remington Shur-Shot shells crap? I'm talking the green name brand ammo here not the black game promo loads. I know they do not contain super hard shot found in premium trap loads but most of the lead hunting loads of yester year were of the same. I shoot, and have shot for decades, Shur-Shot shells at upland, mostly sharptails and shot a truck load of big mallards in my day with the same, 1 1/8 oz. of 5 or 6 shot @1255fps back when lead was still legal for the aforementioned.
Bought a few flats of 7 1/2's and shot these on crows but found them a bit stiff for most applications. Again, sixes killed mallards stone dead over deeks when my friends were using 3 inch mag stuff and doing the same. The old antage was again, pattern not power kills.

Dont let anyone fool you, just because the components are not high end or the lead is not "magnum" it does not mean it will not kill crows. I have shot thousands of crows with the remington promo, black hull game loads in both 7 1/2 and 6s. Would I prefer to use other shells? Sure. But dead is dead and for the most part its the Indian and not the arrow.

I guess I should have been more specific with my thoughts. I am looking for what patterns best and at the longest distances. It is just a curiosity thing with me. I kept track of the last 6 hunt of the season that I was by myself and I shot an average of 54 percent with the cheap ammo in 7 1/2's and 8's. I know it will kill. I am trying to figure out what is really the best load available. From there I will then determine if cost is justifiable compared to what I have been shooting.
