I was lookin at a SX3 but I think Im gonna go with a 391 urika 2.  I shoot a benelli M1 in the field and a browning gold at clays.  I want something middle of the road.  The gold is heavy and handles ok the benelli handles great but will beat you up on a clays corse.  I love the slim forarm of the 391 it feel more like a benelli but Im shure being a gas gun kicks less.

My question is how reliable has your 391 been and if any parts broke where they avalable and were they easy to fix?  I have heard the 391 has alot of parts.  I also want the optima bore choke.  Which choke system does the 391 urika 2 have?  The optima or the optima plus?

Feel free to chime in here Bob cause I know you shoot a beretta and you have probobly shot more crows with it than I ever will due to populations in Tn arent all that.  So you would have put your 391 to the test that most havent other than sporting clays guys.

Thanks a bunch.

Hi Troy,

I like the model 391 very much, I've shot two of the Urika models for the past 5 seasons without any problems. I have them checked by our local gunsmith at the end of each season so if anything needs to be worked on we can get er done now. I bought a Urika 2 model this past september so now I own 3 Beretta's. I hate cleaning shotguns when I'm worn out after being out all day so I shoot one until it gets so dirty it hangs up, I put it up and shoot another one. When I get home I clean em all in one shot. As a general rule I can fire anywhere from 1,000 to 1,500 rounds trouble free, after that due to the dirty powder in the El Cheapo ammo you will start to experience some jams.

Troy, if you are wanting a shotgun that is gas operated and very reliable then I am sure you will love the Beretta.

Bob A.

I have a Beretta that has not been cleaned in nearly 10 years.  It still shoots great unless it get below 25 degrees Farenheit outside, then it gets slow and hangs occasionally.  I went and bought another to have for when it does get cold.  Berettas are well known for their reliability.  I will never shoot anything else.

Hi Troy,

I have the 391 Extrema, its awsome,Weather resistent, cycles any thing!! Mine is 28" barrel with an opti-glo site.I use all the way from sea ducking, pass shooting, pigeons, crows to skeet + sporting clays! I've had mine for 5 years and thousands of rounds and its awsome!! If you abuse stuff through your hunting applications like I do go for the EXTREMA 2 with the camo/synthetic stock-you won't be sorry!!biggrin

                                     No I DON'T WORK FOR BERETTA!smile

hey hizz,

I just looked at the extrema 2 last night while out shopping. I thought it seemed light and was wondering about how it would swing, it felt kinda whippy in the store. Also, is your's a 3 1/2 in. and if so do you shoot the larger shells much ? Thanks, Big A

I dont think the extrema is at all like a 391, dont know why they even call it a 391.  The extrema is made after a franchi 612.  Thats the whole reason beretta bought franchi was to build a 3.5" waterfowl gun on the 612 system.  The 391 urika has a completly different systen.  But all rave about the extrema.  I dont want a 3.5" gun I already have two.  I would like to shoot an extrema with a 3.5" goose thumper just to see if the recoil is as low as people say.

It's a tough choice... I shot a Franchi 612 for a while and loved the gun..I also bought a 912...Both great..I never cleaned my 612 and then it jamed on me during a crow shoot due to being dirty...I was so angry that I went and looked at the Beretta Extrema but just couldn't pay for what didn't feel right.. The 612 feels so nice.. I ended up with a Benelli M2 and shot it for years.. I now shoot a Browning Maxus..I love both of them...I have my 612 at a local gn shop shop for sale..I'm keeping the 912 for 3.5" capability.. Good luck with your choice..

Troy,

Interesting observation about the Extrema and the Franchi model 612. A lot of people confuse the Urika model 391 with the synthetic stock with the Extrema.

I looked at the Benelli and almost got one, instead I choose the Browning maxus and love it! Hardly any kick with out 'crow loads' and as reliable as my 870! Look into it.

Big honkers, I'm hanging out in Stevensville, close to St. Joe Mich. Up here with my wife and kids doing some spring break action. My sister, brother, and dad live here. My brother in law is a hardcore huntin and fishin dude. He has a Donzi rigged for lake Mich. fishing, 3 of us limited out on coho in two hours (15) fish. We had 4 on at once, then 5 on at once chinese fire drill bigtime. Seeing lots of crows and gonna hunt our deer property once we plant our food plots (no special permit required).

BigA, what are u guys catchin those ho's on ? I fish Lake Ontario, haven't been out yet, but theres still steelies in the Salmon river. Ho's are great fun, we troll them on spoons, & get them in the river in the fall on spawn sacks.

DDart, we were fishin this morn out of the port of St. Joseph Mich. We set up south of the pier in about 25 ft. of water. We trolled south and started hitting fish in 10 to 15 ft. The water temp jumped @ 2 degrees to 36-38. The fish were so thick i think we could have trolled a dead crow on a flat line and caught fish! The lures we used today were gold/chartruse j-9 rapalas, small orange dodger with black and green tinsle flies, rainbow colored pro-king spoons, and rattling thinfins in red, green and white. the bite was insane,it was awsome. goin back out sat.

shad,

I've fished the salmon river every october since 96. Kings, coho, steelhead and browns.

The group changed a little and now we bring golf clubs if the fishing is bad.

i had an extrema 2. if you think that gun is "whippy" don't go with the maxus. unless you want a light, soft recoiling, easy to shoot, reliable gun. I LOVE my Maxus

NH, are you saying you ditched the E2 in favor of a maxus?

I would go with the Maxus! Soft recoil and reliable!! Here in MN we just had our first season on crow (last's for the month of March) A buddy and I both shoot a Maxus and took nearly 400 crow this month and not one glitch from either gun.

Thanks for the gun reviews, I'm not sold or loyal to any make or brand. I'm going to get rid of a 11-87 and some others and get a new auto over this summer. I thank all you guys for your input.I'll checkout all I can before buying. Thanks, Big A

Shane,

I hear you on the 11-87. I got the 30 inch bbl. on mine. I'm still contemplating the SX3. That will be the all around gun. I box up the 10 ga. BPS @ 11 lbs. also.

Mike
